Got following from BBC News website

A transport plane, meanwhile, was reportedly hit by a missile but landed safely at Baghdad airport without any injuries.

"A DHL plane took off from Baghdad airport this morning and was hit by a SAM-7 surface to air missile," an unidentified military official was quoted by French news agency AFP as saying.

The aircraft, an Airbus A300 cargo plane with three crew members on board, declared an "in-flight emergency", US military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Byron James said.

Witnesses said the plane landed with one of its wings on fire

Plane lands at Baghdad Int'al Airport 'With Wing on Fire'

Post by SN30952 »

A cargo plane landed at Baghdad International Airport with its wing on fire.
Baghdad - Al Muthana Airport, before Saddam Airport; BGW - Can somebody confirm: Is this BGW or Bagdad in Arizona?
The plane was trailing thick smoke and part of its wingtip was missing as it overflew Baghdad's Mahmoudiya district before touching down, said a witness.
The US military said it was aware that there had been an emergency landing but could not provide any further details.
The aircraft, an Airbus A300 cargo plane operated by freight company DHL, landed safely at 0900 after declaring an "in-flight emergency", US military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Byron James said.
There were no preliminary reports of any casualties.

It was not immediately clear whether the flames had been caused by a technical malfunction, or whether the aircraft had been hit by ground fire.
In recent weeks, insurgents have shot down several US helicopters using shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles and rocket propelled grenades.
Yesterday an aircraft from Falcon Express (FedEx) was attacked by an RPG.

DHL is German: DHL beschäftigt in der Region derzeit 13 Mitarbeiter, davon acht irakische Staatsbürger. Weitere sieben Mitarbeiter sollen folgen.

Aircraft was an A300B4F from DHL, doing the regular second rotation from BAH to SAD.
Aircraft was climbing out, passing 8000 ft and 6NM downrange, when it took a missile hit through the wing.
Fire broke out and all hydraulics was lost.
They made 3 circles working to get the gear down, then made an overspeed landing back in SAD, resulting in an overrun.
Most importantly, all crew members are ok albeit a bit shocked.
The crew and aircraft are fully insured for the operation undertaken. DHL are of course re-evaluating their position with the entire Iraq operation.

A military source said the missile had a one-pound warhead -- not large enough to bring down a large aircraft, but enough to cause damage.

Does someone know how many planes (and the registrations) of DHL are currently operating in Iraq. I know there are several planes even based there.

I believe they have at least all the 727 over there (the ones that were stationed in BRU). No noise regulations.

About the 727's in Iraq, I know that EC-IDQ (ex. OO-DHT) has done some flights before it has been retired at EBOS.

Stephen,

Do you maybe know the registrations of DHL's planes based in Iraq :?:

Does this mean they repainted the A300's in an all white livery with a BIG DHL logo on it, to make clear that they are not military ??? Because on the picture you can clearley see that the plane hasn't the usual colours.

Hi everybody...

Just for you info.... The OO-DLR is doing Brussels - Athens on 23/11.

According to CNN's picture it must be a A300/B4F with GE engines hit at Bagdad. (probably OO-DLL)
Islandsflug TF-ELB has PW engines

The main thing is that no innocent people were killed in this - it could have been alot worse.

TWA - you originally signed off your post as "Dustbiter"!! You also are one who has two identities on this forum?? (Nothing on here ever escapes me, believe me!!!!)
Sabena and Sobelair - gone but never forgotten.

Are you sure for the engines, because the picture was very small :?:

That could be right Dave, but don't you think DHL has maybe given those planes new colours with lots of white, so that it's more obvious that they are not military (mostly dark) :?:
