Swissair canceled because of bad weather

Post by regi »

Flights from Brussels to Zurich were canceled because of the winter weather in Zurich. Passengers did not get any compensation as hotels or transport refunds.
Passengers are mostly rerouted by Lufthansa over Frankfurt.

I don't mean to complain, but that's hardly newsworthy. Denver Airport was blanketed by four straight days of heavy snow last week. Hundreds of flights were cancelled and the stranded passengers were sleeping in the airport for several days. :(
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly an airplane?

Exactly as provided by EU legislation in case of problems independent from the airline.

But it is a change from the former Swissair policy: I had once ben stranded in Genoa by a snow storm, and Swissair booked me a meal and a hotel for the night. It was the next day that I had problems, because the flight had left in the middle of the night with the crew only...

It might be just me, but in my interpretation, the EU legislation says that the airline just doesn't have to pay the compensation in case of an external cause, but it doesn't say that the same applies to hotels etc. Maybe someone can explain this to me?

Switserland is not a part of the EU, so I guess those rules don't apply for them.

The rules apply for all flights between Switzerland and the EU.

Not to nitpick, but didn't Swissair go bankrupt around 5 years ago?
