Why is flying from Houston to Cancun so expensive?
Hello
It is only 2 hrs flight and seems like from Houston to anywhere I can find cheap tickets but not to Cancun. I searched and found several airlines serving between 2 cities thus it should be cheaper than $400 but yet I can not find anything less than this amount.
Are we lacking competition around Houston cuz from NY to Cancun which is a 5 hrs flight it is much much cheaper sometimes less than 100 dollars.
And there are no startup airlines around Houston like spirit, jetblue, usa2000 etc
Or is there something special about Texas that I do not know?
Please help.
Thanks

Try http://www.kayak.com - it generally finds the cheapest flights in and around the US.

You are absolutely right about the lack of competition. How bad is it? Very bad, since there is a single airline flying the route: Continental Airlines. Aeromexico used to fly IAH-CUN, but it is not doing so now. And you know what happens with prices when only an airline covers a route... On the other hand, NYC-CUN has lots of competition: Jetblue from JFK since very recently (november/2006); American also flies JFK-CUN; Continental from Newark... a very different situation.
I have not heard up to now any news on low cost carriers planning to fly IAH-CUN. You can bet prices would go down if they do.
I recommed you to visit one of the web sites already noted by the Forum members in previous replies.
Sorry, best luck in your trip, hope you enjoy it!!!
