From what I hear, this is a case of 'good riddance' (terrible service, enormous delays, incidents,...).
Being opportunistic here: One of their planes, EC-JMF, is an early-build, GE-powered A330-300. Very few early A333 with those engines, and thus a bit of an 'orphan', and probably not easy to place somewhere else. Except with one airline, which happens to operate three of the other few early-build GE 333s, and happens to be looking at getting an additional plane...

Air Madrid fleet age was 11+ years old and lacked maintenance.
The Spanish Dirección General de Aviación Civil was thinking to suspend its AOC license.
NM decided then after more and more technical problems, remember the recent story of one of our member's 'mom in law', to stop operating.
Air Madrid is op de fles, how do you say that in Spanish? 'en el flacon' due to lack of maintenance, and I presume not because of the age of its aircraft. Such lacks are usually due to underfinancing.
NM's long haul flights have known month of huge delays, they even cancelled some of their long haul flights, and anticipated the suspension.

Between 200,000 and 300,000 passengers abandoned?
Latest tallies say, between 200,000 and 300,000 passengers could be abandoned over Christmas.
MN is blaming its actions on a development ministry threat to suspend its licence.
Ticket sales had fallen dramatically since the announcement from the development ministry and suppliers had refused it credit.
Air Madrid's commercial image was completely destroyed.... by the ministry it says.
But can Air Madrid ignore what we have seen in the movies, see higher.
And are 60h delays and keeping passengers on board aircraft for overnight because of delays regular practices?
Problems may occur sometime, but if they persist, than it is time for real crisis management, MN did not succeed to overcome both. Lack of finance, lack of management skill?

3 wide bodies doing one return per day= 2000 pax/day
a couple of 319's another 1500 pax a day
So Christmas should last for two and a half months to leave 300000 abandoned
That said, still a shame for the poor ones who are stranded...

I feel this is not going to be brought to a good end, this is going to cost a lot of extra euros i am afraid, or the spanish governement should do something for stranded passengers.
However, she supposed to fly back january 25th so maybe they are back in the air or IATA is arranging a solution with other carriers.
Having your mom in law for 1,5 months is okay but 1,5 year is killing
