I don't understand why the IATA code of Nis airport is not simply "NIS"
Same thing for Hof, in south-east Germany... Why HOQ instead of a simple HOF ? 8)

there already is 2 airports carrying the IATA code of NIS. But yes, i agree, i think it would be better having it the way you described it.

cherry point in NC, USofA (ICAO: KNIS) and Simberi Island in Papua New Guinea are the 2 airports whose IATA cose is NIS according to the site below

http://www.airlinecodes.co.uk/

P.S HOF is also taken by some place in Saudi Arabia called Hofuf.

KNIS is not an IATA code, IATA has 3-character codes. 4-character codes are ICAO. And for the rest, yes indeed, first come, first served.

In the US, the ICAO code is the IATA code +K in the beginning. Quite simple.
Actually, your site http://www.airlinecodes.co.uk/ looks to be wrong, the current code for Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station (Cunningham Field) is KNKT.

Not so simple as all that, dear friend. Would you care to check for Fairbanks or Anchorage? Or Honolulu?
