JAL Chief Executive Haruka Nishimatsu told the newspaper in comments published on Tuesday: "The A380 is a completely controversial concept to the present aviation market.
"The A380 has a much bigger problem than the (Boeing) 787 in terms of delivery."
He said most carriers preferred to buy fuel-efficient mid-sized aircraft such as the Boeing 787 rather than the larger A380, the FT reported.
JAL has never bought from Airbus anyway. Why would that change? The Japanese government has always eaten from the hand of the American government. Only if competition from other airlines flying A380s to Narita becomes too strong will JAL reconsider its position.
JAL is the Cubana of Western aviation, only buying from their 'lord'.
If the 787 would be built by Airbus and the 380 by Boeing, we would have seen them order NO 787s and at least 25 380s...
Seems the leading airlines of the world like SQ, QF, LH, AF all have a different look on the matter... maybe this is just JL's way of saying: we are no longer belonging to this exclusive club of top-airlines and we definitely play in another league than these few top airlines.
Interesting to note also how for the first time a CUSTOMER has hinted at 787 delays.... At present the official Boeing mantra is the 787 is still going to be perfectly on time, but it seems Boeing has now sent out launch customer and undisputed Boeing loyalist JAL to prepare the croud they are going to have to break their promisses...
Delay is apparently going to be 2 months for sure already (and the first plane isn't assembled yet, so who knows what flight testing may add to this?)
JAL is a Boeing customer, so what? I can't remember the last Boeing airplane that HP or US bought (I think HP last bought Boeing in the late 80's). I guess we should bow down to our French and German lords.
When US buys only Airbus it is good business, but when JAL buys only Boeing they are letting ideology get in their way?

OK so they should ditch all their 747s as well since the 747 is significantly larger than what they say airlines prefers.
As a matter of fact, they have been reducing their B747 fleet for a while now, replacing them with B777's. With new runways coming in at Tokyo (both airports), the need to fly the B747 domestically has dropped. Both ANA and JAL would rather fly smaller planes with more frequencies. That trend is expanding to international routes too. Both carriers are flying B777-300ER to Europe and North America, replacing or adding to B747's frequencies.

But why are they replacing 747 with 777-300 rather than going down to appropriate 767, A330 or A340 variant?

Lets look at it this way.
The range of the 764ER and A332 are just over 10k. The range of the 744 is at least 13.5k giving JAL much more choices of where to go (Both the A332 and 764ER can't get from NRT to the JFK). Range aside, neither the A332 or B764 carry enough cargo and we all know cargo is the golden egg these days. Now that leaves A340 vs B777 and we have seen in that head to head battle, the B777 wins almost every time (and with cargo considerations it even falls back more).
Considering they already have B777s, there is no way that an A340 is going to push its way into JAL.
Lets be honest, Airbus has no answer to the 777 and won't for years to come.
Japan aviation industry has been involved in Boeing projects more than involved in similar projects by Airbus.
I think two or three companies from Japan are also risk-sharing partners in the 787 project. I am not aware of similar first tier partnerships with Airbus. I think this is (just) one reason why Japanese airlines will favour Boeing in future. Another kind of partnership exists with the licensed production of (smaller) US-designed planes in Japan, also with no equivalent with European companies.
So the conclusion is, the Japanese aviation industry has successful partnerships with US companies, and the Japanese demand on aircrafts was covered by companies involved in these relations. That's all. Why not continuing? Examples of American carriers that buy Airbus or questions like "why doesn't LH entirely buy Airbus planes?" are inappropriate . They buy from a completely different situation.
You guys are tilting at windmills here. JAL is a publicly traded company and does what is best for their investors. If that means buying Airbus, they will buy Airbus. 7G has started up service with A320s without any problems.
Every time a Japanese Airline buys Boeing, the same story comes up from people here on this forum. You hold Japan to a different standard than Europe, USA or the Middle East. Heck I've noticed the same discrimination against U.S. carries as well. "They buy Boeing because of political reasons" you all say.
Look I'll tell you why JAL buys Boeing and it is for the same reason US buys Airbus. Because they get a sweet deal. I've joked around with US buying B787s, but I know that won't happen. Trust me here when I say US will buy Airbus for our widebody fleet and the primary reason is for the price of the aircraft that Airbus will give us. Works that way around the world. If there was such a thing as a A350 out there, maybe JAL might look at buying one, but right now that isn't in the cards.
That JAL won't buy any A380's doesn't surprise me at all for some reasons already mentioned here in this topic.

Look everybody knows that JAL has some special ties with Boeing. They are probaby very happy with the planes they get from them and get nice deals no doubt and that's why they probably stay a loyal customer of Boeing. This being said the same is happening with Airbus customers around the world. Until here I fully agree with you. Now why can't we say that the statement saying that JAL won't buy the A380 doesn't surprise us? We all know that they tend to Boeing.... And this is not ment to be an A vs B war. However we need to aknowledge that some airlines in the world will have their preference between A or B for some reason which we don't know (may it be financial, loyalty, Mx etc...).
They are downsizing the aircraft size also due to the high landing fees in some of thier home airports. Landing fees will be a problem for the A380. I still havent heard what they will be yet at some airports, but i have heard that they may be significantly higher than B747.
....
Theres nothing better than slow cooked fall off the bone BBQ, Texas style
A friend of mine who works for AA says that Japan is beginning to restrict 3 and 4 engine aircraft at their airports. She says that the Ministry of Transport announced that aircraft with more than two engines would be banned at ITM in April 2006. She also said that most of the other airports in Japan are so impacted because of the density that this restriction might be passes to other airports. I'm guessing this has something to do with the decision not to have A380 purchases as it will become much harder to use them. Not good news for the B748i either IMO.

A fact is more important than a Lord Mayor!
Even an administrator can have an opinion.
It is no surprise, Japan always are American friendly, and they want to be and they have to be... i mean it is historical reason that they dislike Chinese, and with Airbus working closer with China, you think they'll buy an Airbus plane?
Let's say Airbus makes much more superior and clearly better planes than Boeing at the moment, Japan will probably be the last (if they ever will) switch to Airbus...
