"If the bid is successful, the two companies would continue to operate separately and compete on the 17 routes which both flew, he added."

The Irish Government (which holds 30% of Aer Lingus) and the Aer Lingus Board do not accept the bid. Surprise?

To me it makes sense.
EI's business model is more and more comparable to FR and EI's long haul ambitions will probably depend more and more on feeding from FR.
On the short haul network I suppose both carriers would rather collaborate within a single entity.
And -last but not least- it offers FR the supremacy in Ireland and a strong foothold in US.
A good position to start conquering some pieces of the US cake no?

Ryanair investors rebel against Aer Lingus bid
Ryanair is facing intense shareholder pressure amid doubts over the strategic merits of its surprise €1.48bn (£1bn) bid for Aer Lingus earlier this week.

Looks like this deal is dead........
UPDATE 4-Ryanair will not raise Aer Lingus bid, deal unlikely
DUBLIN, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Ryanair (RYA.I: Quote, Profile, Research) will not raise its offer for Irish carrier Aer Lingus (AERL.I: Quote, Profile, Research), Europe's largest budget airline said, in a move that seems likely to put an end to its hostile takeover attempt for at least a year.
Chief Executive Michael O'Leary said in a letter to Aer Lingus shareholders he did not believe the strategy being pursued by Aer Lingus management could deliver a share price for the former state airline above Ryanair's 2.80 euro-a-share bid, which values the company at 1.48 billion euros ($1.9 billion).
"Accordingly, Ryanair confirms that it will not increase its offer of 2.80 euros per Aer Lingus share," O'Leary said in the letter, posted on Tuesday.
His comments knocked Aer Lingus's shares to their lowest level since the bid was announced. They lost 2.1 percent to close at 2.68 euros in an Irish stock market that closed 1 percent higher.

And in the mean time MOL is probably buying Aer Lingus shares, he is too smart to talk his 20% down!

Six years later:
Ryanair makes cash bid for Aer Lingus
Ryanair said it planned to make a 694 million euro ($880 million) cash bid for Aer Lingus (AERL.I) in a fresh attempt to gain control of its Irish rival. Ryanair said on Tuesday after the market close that it would offer 1.30 euros per share for Aer Lingus, in which it already owns a 29.8 percent stake.
The main obstacle to a takeover would be the European Commission, which investigated an earlier bid and decided to prohibit it in June 2007.
Britain's competition authorities could also cause problems. The Office of Fair Trading last week ruled that Ryanair's ownership of the minority stake threatened competition in the UK.
But Ryanair said on Tuesday that it believed circumstances had changed materially since 2006, citing consolidation within the industry, more capacity at Dublin airport and the increased likelihood that the Irish government would sell its own 25 percent stake in the Irish flag carrier.
