Bagage hold question for flights with a stopover

Post by Captain »

Hello,

Let's say a flight goes from Brussels to Sevilla via Madrid.

Is the baggage separated in the hold to allow easy and quick unloading when the plane stops in Madrid before continuing to Sevilla (with passengers on board who boarded at BRU)?

Captain.

Yes it is normally. When working with containers, a seperate one will hold the transfers. When throwing the bags just like they are in the plane (so without a container), a separate compartiment will be used if possible.

Thanks Jense for the info.

Would you or someone else know if they have any clue as to where a luggage may be in the hold (loaded first, middle, last cart)?

I'm thinking of when a passenger doesn't show up at the gate but there luggage is in the hold and needs to be removed.

I was on a 747 once and a passenger failed to show up but I was surprised at how in about 5 min the bag was identified and removed.

Most airlines know in which container the luggage is. I know SN has this system on their A330

But with the small planes like the Avros, the loading people have to search the whole compartiment for one piece or more offcourse.

Depends of airline and type of aircraft. For example SNBA has containers on their A330 fleet but on their A319 and AVRO the just load it in the hold (this is called bulk). 737's are all bulk, on the A320 it is possible to load containers (Lufthansa does) but also to load as bulk (Thomas Cook). Containers have their advantages but offcourse a metal container also weighs something!

Thanks for the great info everyone. Does anyone have any pictures of containers (are they the same you sometimes see lying around airports for cargo use)?

yep, same containers. Mostly ave/ake (ie A330/B747,MD11), dpe/ape/dqp (B767), akh (a320/321)

On some flights they even build up pllts with bags (Air Zaire comes to mind). Gives hell of a problem when you need to do a security check

As EBAW_flyer already said, it depends from airline to airline if they're using containers or not.
Sometimes, it even depends from day to day (for example Turkish: they sometimes come to BRU with the A321 and they mention on their intern Telex to use containers, but when the loaders on the ramp are opening the cargo-holds they see there are no containers used but all bags are just throwed in the bulk...)

Air Portugal, Lufthansa, Austrian, ... with the A32X series all use containers. Most charters like Thomas Cook, Onur, ... prefer the bags just loaded into the bulk (on the A320).
