Any info on KUL?

Post by n5528p »

Good afternoon folks...

From August 12th on I will make one VIE - KUL - SYD - KUL - VIE rotation with on of the T7s of OS. I know Sydney very wall and will have no problen in finding my way there, but for the two days I will be in KUL, I could need some hints.

Aviation related like museums or flying clubs where I could go for a scenic flight would be perfect, but also non-aviation hints are more than welcome.

TIA; Bernhard

Personally the best hotel for me to stay at, would be the old Mutiara now the Crowne Plaza http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/cp/1/en/hd/kulcp

Also another good thing to do is visit the Kuala Lumpur Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur), go and see the Petronas Towers too, although I found getting tickets to go up, near imposible. However there is a massive shopping centre underneath the tower, good for any ladies that are on the holiday!

As regards transport the airport is great, it is along way out from KL like everyone says but don't worry about it, there is an express train that goes to the central station every 15 odd mins I think. Personally I've always gone into the city by mini bus organised before I travel, the hotel can sort that sort of thing out. There are thousands of taxis too, but always use the official ones obviously as there are touts around.

The people are great very friendly and polite as with most of the Far East.

In regard to your aviation stuff, never spotted there other than when walking around the airport writing regs down. I'm unsure to the attitude of spotting there, although a airliners.net search always brings out many pics taken from the same place at KLIA.

The MAS T777's are good, flew biz with them to Sydney 2 years ago, great crews polite and friendly, Sate is great too! Economy is 2-5-2 if I remember correctly so push for a window seat!

Hi

I was in KL three times last year and it is one of my favourite places on the planet!

Funny - I would also recommend the Crowne Plaza Mutiara as it was ridiculously cheap and of a verh high standard. Pay a little bit more for an executive floor room as it is well worth it for the free bar between 5 and 8 as will as the snacks and cold drinks available all day. I mean it was only an extra 10 or 15 euro for that floor.

I also stayed in the Mandarin Oriental at KLCC (next to the towers) on one occasion and it was also very nice but more expensive and to be honest a bit less personal.

Certain things need to be done but you unfortunately haven't much time. Try and go to the Petronas towers - you cant get to the top but it doesn;t matter to be honest as they are just amazing structures. You need to be there first thing though to get a ticket as it is first come first served.

If you want some good cheap chinese food go to bukit bintang station (you can actually walk it from the crowne plaza in ten minutes or so) and turn right into a back street. It only seems to get busy at night and you will see a row of restaurants with plastic tables and chairs outside. Looks dubious, thats what i thouhgt but the food was amazing. We spent more on two beers than on dinner it was so cheap. Beware - alcohol is not cheap in KL - its about the only thing that isnt to be honest.

Chinatown is good at night for knock off stuff though I don't like it so much anymore as they have prevented people selling the knock off cd's! Lots of police raids on that specifically apparently.

Lots of shopping malls - the one under KLCC is pretty good.

Night life is interesting. If you feel flush with cash go out to Bangsar (about 5 euro taxi ride) and you will find where the wealthier Malaysians go....some nice restaurants and bars. Or if its more low brow you are after there is jalan ampang (this may be wrong.....) which has the oh so classy Thai cowboy bar, beach club and such hotspots. Lets just see you can buy more than a beer in these places.....and if you are that way inclined ( I wasn;t but one of my colleagues was..... ) watch out as the male / female distinction is somewhat blurry in many cases!!!

Enjoy your trip it really is a fabulous place.
