A rookie pilot and a navigator who landed their stricken F-111 on its belly after losing a wheel on takeoff say the emergency has boosted their confidence in the ageing strike fighters.

What I do not get: Why flying for hours to get rid of the fuel?
The Aardvark can dump fuel and does so quite frequently at several airshows because the nozzle is located between the afterburners and the dumped fuel could be ignited, which looks truly spectacular.

So why fly around in circles?
