North Korean missiles endanger aviation
On 4th July, the communist leaders of North Korea have launched 7 nuclear test missiles.
According to several press reports, about a dozen passenger planes were flying in the area when the missiles splashed down in the Sea of Japan. The planes, operated by non-Japanese airlines, were approaching Japan on a regular trans-Euro-Asian route which flies over Vladivostok and the Japanese port of Niigata. They were bound for Japanese airports in Narita outside Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, it said.
Most Japan-bound planes from Europe pass over a point called IGROD in the Sea of Japan. Five of the six missiles landed some 200 to 400 km northwest of the point. The other missile, believed to be a long-range Taepodong-2, splashed down some 100 km north of the point.
Japan's All Nippon Airways, meanwhile, diverted its three Europe-bound flights on Wednesday north of its regular route as a precaution. Its six flights will also use the new route on Thursday, the report said.
Not a single air traffic control center received a warning about the lauch.

Theres nothing better than slow cooked fall off the bone BBQ, Texas style
And you believe that ?LX-LGX wrote:This is about an aviation incident.
Already on 22 June, US defence was on alert. If the US government is really taking care of his citizens, and protecting his allies ( Japan....) the
first thing they would do is to inform everybody, especially planes in the neighborhood and the ATC's....No?
Please, try to see the facts, The US is scaring every week the world with something : it started with WMD's in Iraq, terrorists everywhere and now some miserable rockets WITHOUT warheads.
'"Come and see next week, we will have something else to raise the alarm for the big evils in the world"/snark
I understand some don't like the U.S. and even hate their actual president. And yes, I also knew already for weeks North Korea was planning the tests. But nobody, including not the CIA, knew when exactly it was going to happen.
But that's not the discussion now: the actual missile launch was not advised to any ATC or IATA. North Korea has launched missiles into the sky where planes were flying around. That should be regarded as unacceptable by everybody involved in aviation.
The U.S. is not on trial here (Japan today asked an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council).
If Bush is really scaring you off, I wonder how scared you are when you board a plane.

I still cant believe they didnt alert ATC. That is just wreckless and stupid. No need to put peoples lives in danger. The world knew the test was going to occur but they didnt know when. The N Koreans had to alert the world to thier impending test for if they didnt and they fired those missles, it could have gotten very very ugly for them. The USA and Russia as well as Britain and France and China have a long history of alerting each other to missle test so no one would think it was an attack and respond with massive force.

The Flemish newspaper "Het Laatste Nieuws" puts it on it's main i-page. HLN refers to the main source of this topic: Jiji, the Japanese press agency.

There where these missiles are launched there is not much air traffic.
Once it is in the air, it is over and higher than the civil aviation routes. Eventually military aircraft could intercept it.
Where it gets dangerous, is where these missiles come back to earth.
(There should be a way to send them back to sender...
btw, the US saw mobile labs in Iraq, but no missiles in N.Korea.
They see what there is not, but do not see what there is.
That was indead a bush leaque job..
Or is Bush on a busman' holiday? And do the others have real holidays on July 04?

Wich scares the hell out of me - perhaps some controller should watch TV once in a while or read some newspaper - just because there was the info. Not that I have any preference for Kim Jong Il or his fellows, but this is simply ridiculous.LX-LGX wrote:Not a single air traffic control center received a warning about the lauch.
Besides that, I do not have any special affection for Mr. Bush either, but I guess the JDF was also well aware of this threat.

I doubt the info was there before the missiles were launched. It doesn't really make sense to know that an hour ago, a missile might have hit a plane. If a plane was hit, the controller would (hopefully) have known it before he saw it on tv.n5528p wrote:perhaps some controller should watch TV once in a while or read some newspaper - just because there was the info.
