Update on the project: new luchtzak.be

Post by luchtzak »

Hi all,

I will use this topic to bring you up-to-date on the changes made on www.luchtzak.be

as some of you knew the old portal was getting really old, the website could be a possible victim for hackers. This topic proves that it happens. Thus I decided to install the latest portal-version and the latest version of phpbb (2.0.21) while we wait for the brand new superforum phpbb 3.0.0 ;-)

- in a few hours the dns to www.luchtzak.be will propagate, no more redirects to http://69.73.175.92
- the frontpage is up and running, a few here and there's to be taken care of. Currently it's impossible to submit your latest aviation news, I suggest to use the forums to bring your news. At present only administrators have authority to publish news on the portalpage, working on it so other members can submit news again.
- the forum is also up and running, all the topics/messages should be there. The forum search however gives some issues. Working on it ASAP!
- coppermine is currently not available, will update you on this ASAP
- top 100 should work very soon
- chatbox currently not available
- some downloads will not work.

I regret the inconveniences but I am positive that we will put this difficult stage behind us very soon!

Please leave feedback in the website related forum, we do read it ;-)

I can't seem to find the 'check new posts since last visit' link anymore.
The homepage sends me straight to the forum, and when I go back the links in the top right corner don't appear as they used to...

Just reporting, I really apreciate the work you put into the site Bart!

ps: the spell-check has vanished too

Another question: since you write 'new luchtzak.be', will there be changes to the homepage? If it is going to be changed, I suggest moving the latest news section to the top of the page, instead of the text & links no repeating visitor reads :) It'll make the news much more visible and practical to read!

Thanks for the feedback, indeed a few items are vanished: quick reply, spell checker, etc...

When I find spare time next to my work and family I will continue to work to bring you the same quality as before ;-)

Just a suggestion for those needing a spell checker, download the Google tool bar, it has an excellent spell checker. Just to use in the meantime.

or download Firefox 2.0 alfa 3 (codename Bon Echo). It includes an instant spell check feature for dozens of languages.

Please allow me to mention that when you navigate to the forums, the navigation bar that used to be there on the left of the screen disappeared and that this restrains easy navigability of the site. It makes it complexer to return to other parts from the website, once you've entered the forum.

I know you can still simply click on the luchtzak logo to return to the home-page and then click on the required link. Yet, this requires 2 clicks instead of 1 while scientific research shows that every aditional required click makes you loose 25% of the potential visitors (non-registered visitors that is). For registered members, this % is probably somewhat lower as they are used to the site, are comitted to it and know what to expect from it. Nevertheless, it limits the userfriendliness of the website to a certain extent.

Therefore my following question: are we currently surfing on the finalised version of luchtzak.be or are their still changes to be made and can we give input for those changes?

Allow me to finalise this post by congratulating the whole webteam on their hard work to maintain and grow this site to what it has become!

Kind regards,
bAIR

How do you submit news? That link doesn't work for me. I can't log in from Login section. I can only login from the forum which restricts me to forum only. :?:

bAIR,

I intend to create a menu on the left-hand side of the forums, yet I didn't find time to do so. Work and family, you know what I mean ;-)

FYI there is a brand new version of the phpbb-forums in beta-release, more info here: http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB which be installed on this website, it contains loads of new features mentioned in this url http://area51.phpbb.com/docs/features.html (check the what is improved and what is new listings).

Yesterday I was in Bologna and I could visit www.luchtzak.be in an internet-café, I write down all the items that need to be handled before I will rest. About 20 items are still open for progamming. Feel free to give input, the webteam and myself will check if it can be realised.

A lot of requests are the avatars, I have uploaded all the avatars I could find in coppermine, you can browse them here: http://coppermine.luchtzak.be/thumbnails.php?album=585

How to add them to your profile? Right-click 'copy image location' and edit in your profile.

Meanwhile a bunch of avatars is now available in your profile too (show gallery bottom of that page).

Please play it fair: don't use anyone else avatar ;-)
