Post by mac-rolec »

ATHENS, Greece (CNN) -- Two fighter jets, one Greek and the other Turkish, collided in mid-air Tuesday over international waters in the southern Aegean Sea, according to the Greek and Turkish government officials.

Additional info : Turkish plane was a R-4F Phantom (Two-seater)

The dispute is about the airspace : Greece claims 16 km territorial, Turkey only recognizes 10 km. The reason for this is the fact some Greek Islands are close to the Turkish mainland, this 16 km claimed by the Greek brings their jets in one case above Turkish territory.

Sorry, but that's really all I can think of when I read such news.
Both countries are in the NATO and are supposed to be allies, maybe Turkey will soon be in the EU - is there no way to settle this in a normal and relaxed manner - most of the time we are talking about some rocks.

There is absolutely no reason to risk lives about this...

At least 'allies' could stick to ICAO interception maneuvres.

It strikes me that such airspace violations, and the resulting Greek interception and simulated dogfights, seem like a great tool to give Greek pilots some training without anyone complaining about the budget..
