New winglets for A320
The first A320 is fitted with modified winglets by Airbus. It has made its first flight today. A picture can already be found on Airliners.net:

Looks quite weird, but not ugly.

If you read closely you can understand that I was pointing on how MUCH MORE economic these NEW winglets will be. Or in other words what is the difference (% of economics) between these new and the older ones. I already know that winglets give you more economical operations on some flights.Airbus_fan wrote:Why do you think they are testing them?SilverJET wrote:Looks very nice indeed.
And what about performance? how will this affect the fuel consumption? Will it be possible for existing A320 to refit them with this new winglets?
Read carefully before you react.
Before testing these new winglets on this airbus 320, the engineers have artificially designed them and did some computersimulation tests on them. So the engineers already know (in theory) how better they are

I think you misunderstood me. You are right about the second part, but you can never know how they will react in real.SilverJET wrote:If you read closely you can understand that I was pointing on how MUCH MORE economic these NEW winglets will be. Lol I wonder where you get this info? Winglets don't reduce the drag (why should they?), they give a better air flow which results in less fuel burn and lighter wake turbulence.fokker_f27 wrote:Winglets increase efficiancy. Winglets prevent vortexes coming off the wingtips because they create drag. So winglets reduce the drag.

The do not prevent vortexes, they reduce them ! If they would truly prevent, then you would see every, but I do mean every, aircraft with winglets !fokker_f27 wrote:Winglets increase efficiancy. Winglets prevent vortexes coming off the wingtips because they create drag. So winglets reduce the drag.
I must say, from my personal point of view, that I would have been happier with blended winglets like on the 737's. But eventually, we can say with total certainty that Airbus knows what it's doing ...Sparrow wrote:I find that this winglets are not for a A320. I find that the winglets are to big for the A320. Can't they make them trendy like the one of the 737-7/8? Or like the small winglets on the 737-200 (like on the link above)?

On a other forum I've read this:
Expectations are that a 4-5% increase in fuel efficency (not as high as 737 (5-6%) because the airbus wing is a bit more efficent) and the big benifit will be increase in range
