Austrian Airlines massive rise in traffic and passengers
Austrian Airlines knew a 20% rise in traffic and a 18% rise in passenger numbers in January 2006. Average loadfactors have risen with 7.2% compared to the year before, now reaching 73.3%.
Austrian Chief Executive Officer Vagn Soerensen: "Both in comparison with other renowned network airlines and with the growth of our Vienna hub, we have been able to market our increased availability more effectively, winning new market shares as a result. More than ever before, our Focus East programme is proving to be a success model for systematic concentration on growth markets. We are opening up numerous new markets and regions in the East, both on behalf of and in partnership with the Austrian economy, and consequently retain the benefit of the First Mover into those markets."

I am not surprised at all.
I recently flew with Austrian a couple of longe haul flights in business class (D) to Asia. Aside of all the details and blabla that I will save you, the conclusion is good quality and competitive price (this is the key combination for success!), together with a relatively small airport that does not make transfer an endless headache.

Very good achievement OS!!!
Keep up the good job and the audacious bet to build an effective hub in Vienna will come true !
Lots of petty minds here and there (in Snba mostly) were very quick to misjudge the airlines preliminary results ...however they should better consider the bold management of OS as an example !
I sincerely wish them all the success they merit as I believe there is a place for an effective Central/East european hub in Vienna.

Next month I will go to Dubai with Astrian.n5528p wrote:Glad to hear that you liked it (I am from Vienna, many friends work for OS and I work at the airport as well), still it shoud be mentioned that OS is in financial troubles. Though not really danegrous at the moment, they have to do something to get back to the black!

Is it true that they fly that route with an
737-800?
Why a midlle range flight with that kind
of aircraft?
Why not an A330?
Has it also an inflight entertainment on board?
Can you tell me more?

Actually I flew with OS VIE - DXB in summer '04. Honestly, I cannot tell if there is any inflight entertainment, but the flight itself was fine. Currently it is operated with a Boeing B737-700.
The kind of aircraft type one uses does not only depend on the range, but also on the number of pax you have on a certain route. If I remember correctly, Korean uses its new B737 on long haul routes.

Normally it's VIE - KUL - SYD and VIE - BKK - MEL if I remember correctly. The flights are very well booked - as said before, OS is the only airline besides BA and is feeded by its SA partners on this route.A_lexander wrote:How are they doing on the Melbourne route?
As I can remember they fly it with B777-200ER.
Although I flew this route already three times, ('94, '99 & '03), only the flight in '03 was with OS, since this route earlier belonged to NG until they were bought by OS. The service is still very good, although the catering is not as perfect as it used to be under NG.
The new seats will be introduced to the fleet this year (late summer, to autumn I guess).
