Ryanair's life-jackets theft

Post by eu01 »

2 UK passengers were each given 4 month suspended sentences by a Spanish court for stealing 3 life-jackets from a Ryanair flight. The 2 passengers flew from Nottingham East Midlands to Barcelona Girona on the 6th of January.
Peter Sherrard, Ryanair’s Head of Communications said:
“The safety of our aircraft, passengers and crew is Ryanair’s No. 1 priority and we welcome this decision which acts as a strong deterrent to the tiny minority of passengers who are guilty of stealing important safety equipment from aircraft. We have now banned these passengers from flying with Ryanair”.

Well, that is certainly some kind of side-effect as FR's inexpensiveness lures this kind of passengers as well. So, we can enjoy the travel opportunities created by low-cost carries, but how to ban all variety of bandits and jerks from traveling with us?

An airplane life jacket makes a nice souvenir. Of course, you should make sure you are not caught. It's all the easier on airlines which do not assign seats, since you don't know who was sitting on the seat which misses the life jacket. Then again, it would be stupid to steal the one from your own seat, better grab one from a totally different seat.

Now a real trophy would of course be if someone managed to steal one of the escape slides (without getting caught!).

And no I never took a life jacket from an airplane. Or even a safety card. But since some people seem to collect safety cards, shouldn't airlines start selling such items for people who want them?

Another yearly trend in summer-period is stealing seatbelts: showing off in a disco with a seatbelt around your head is 'cool'.

Did anyone ever succeed in stealing a whole seat? I do recall that someone once managed to steal the captain's seat from a Star Trek set exhibit somewhere.

How pathetic, hope you never have to reach for a life jacket on board a plane to save your life only to find some prat has nicked it.

Well, every aircraft has spare life-jackets.

Many passengers steal life-jackets to use it e.g. on their boat at their holiday destination

Some people are mad. Saftey cards I can understand, but something which could be dangerous? If you don't have a saftey card, then you can borrow the person next to you's, or get one from a flight attendent.

Low-life comes from all classes of society, my friend. When the wealthy steal, they steal a LOT more (Enron, Parmelat, the UN's Oil for Food program, etc.).
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly an airplane?

An escape slide costs $250,000. They are expensive because they are designed and manufactured to a very high degree of reliability.

I think that figure will put you in jail for a very long time.

So your condoning this blatant act of theft of such vital safety equipment because they carry spares?

No I don't, I fully disagree with people stealing life-jackets! But in case it happens the aircraft has spare life-jackets for the safety of other passengers.

About safety-cards : just ask the crew if they don't have a spare one. Every time I asked for one, they gave me a brand new one!!
So the next passenger doesn't have to be afraid not to have one!

Ryanair's life jacket theft

Post by airazurxtror »

Last year, on a Ryanair flight from Roma to Charleroi, when checking if the life jacket was under my seat, I found there was none.
As they say, there are more aircraft in the sea than submarines in the sky.
I thus asked the air-hostess and she gave me a replacement life-jacket.
In their very last Boeings 737-800, the life jackets are above the seats, near the oxygen masks. Difficult to steal one without beeing seen.

Hello everyone, since i am new to this site i humbly salute you.
I would like to react to all the posts sent previously by adding that as a simple airline passenger I check every time i go in a plane and sit on my assigned seat if the life jacket is there.
What annoys me is that i always do that, sort of hiding myself, like if I didn't want the other passengers to notice that i check it, in order not to give a bad feeling about the flight to others. Of course my biggest fear would be to be obliged to ask for it to the crew as it would have been stolen by some .....; It happened to me when I was younger that i Had to ask for it but never since. My question is : do the Crew feel the request for the jacket perfectly is understandable and normal in terms of safety, or do they direcly judge you as the one who is meticulously afraid ???
Anyway thank you "luchtzack" for all the work with your site as it is helpful to get a lot of answers to a lot of questions about aviation and Congratulations for the birth. Best regards to all.

As a cabin crew member we would like to be informed if the life jacket under your seat is missing. The spare life jackets are of little use if we have an unplanned ditching.I don't think there is an airline that check the life jackets of the aircraft after every flight, maybe only dailly or weekly. At my airline it is part of our emergency equipment check that each cabin crew member check at least 10 seats for life jackets, but this is only done when you board the aircraft for your 1st flight. Some days you do up to 4 flights on the same aircraft.

Our ground engineers say that we loose on average 2 life jackets per aircraft per month.

I don't know how big is your airline, but that means that there are 2 persons every month that stole that, wow, i am surprised!
