Post by n5528p »

Austrian will be the first western airline to establish regular services to Iraq presumably from March 09th, 2006.

City of Erbil in Northern Iraq to become scheduled destination up to three times a week from beginning of March 2006 onwards

The Austrian Airlines Group will become the first European airline to be granted the right to operate scheduled services into Iraq in the near future. Preparations are now well underway to fly to the city of Erbil in Northern Iraq from 9 March 2006. The service will operate twice a week during March and April, and three times a week from May onwards. The Austrian Airlines Group will fly its scheduled route to Erbil using an Airbus A319.

The city of Erbil in Kurdistan is a safe gateway into Iraq. With a population approaching one million people, Erbil is the fourth-largest city in Iraq, and the fastest-growing in the country. The United Nations Organisation plans to set up a support point for Iraq in Erbil. A range of renowned companies are currently active in the developing and expanding the regional economy of Kurdistan, while Erbil also provides rapid and safe overland access to the cities of Mosul, Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah. The integration of the new service to Erbil into Austrian’s global route network will open up numerous European and intercontinental connecting flights into Iraq via the company’s Vienna hub. Other than Austria, the most important source markets for flight revenue to the Iraqi region of Kurdistan include Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Great Britain, Eastern Europe and North America. As new „Regional Manager Kurdistan/Iraq“ Peter Katzlberger was appointed, who will be responsible for all sales, marketing and pricing strategy in Erbil in this function.

Austrian Management Board Member Dr. Josef E. Burger issued the following statement on the new destination in Iraq: ‘Erbil is truly a milestone in the development of the Austrian route network. Once again, it will allow us to underline our pioneering role and specialisation in the form of our Focus East programme of services to Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. With our flights to Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Syria and the United Arab Emirates, we are already the number three carrier in Europe when measured by services into the Middle East.

Now, with Erbil in Iraq, we are creating a connection that is essential for the economic re-development of the country, particularly for international traffic, and taking full advantage of the traditionally strong relations between Austria and the Arabian region. Once again – just as in Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk, Sarajevo, Pristina, Krasnodar and elsewhere in the past – we have become the first western airline to open up an eastern destination of key importance.’

You know I actually think they would get high load factors on these flights as the Kurdish part of Iraq seems to be going through an economic boom. Although I can't imagine what the insurance premium for OS would be on these flights.

By all accounts Erbil is reasonably safe so it is a good move by Austrian. The rest will follow when they see the success - I have heard that the Kurdish region is pretty safe nowadays - maybe planning a wee trip there towards the end of the year myself if the rest of Iraq ever cools down.

Turkish -Fly Air- has been flying to North Iraq for the last couple of weeks now and I understand the load factor is satisfactory for them. They fly to Erbil and Suleymaniah. I guess, technically, they are the first European airliner flying to Iraq. THY has no plans flying to Iraq as Iraq Airways has regular services to Istanbul. I am guessing security fears and high insurance costs as well as some political reasons behind this decision.

Technically speaking , Turkish Airlines is not an european airline but an asian airline.
Europe ends at the Bosporus. As far as I know Ankara is the capital, and it is located in the middle of asian Turkey.
If however Turkey would be split into an asian and european half, with Istanbul being the capital of the european side, well, technically speaking, we would be able to speak about an european airline.

Regi,

I see the argument is about geographical position and being physically connected to the continent. I know why Malta and Cyprus are EU members now!! Their capital cities and territories are physically in Europe.

Let's talk about aviation. At the end of the day, it is wonderful to see an airliner (any, European or Asian) will fly the people of Iraq despite all challenges and problems the Iraqis have been going through. I wish all the best to those airliners and salute them.

A tour operator at The Netherlands is also going to organise "holidays" to Erbil. but, I have no clue from what kind of airport or airline the will fly to Erbil.
