Well,

I have to admit I am ignorant here, but always thought they and CASA were brought in later, but in the late 60's, Airbus was a Franco-German show against the yanks commercial aviation industry.

I beleive by content the largest supplier to the A380 is the USA, so all this nationalism is kind of a sideshow in the age of globalization.

Without competition we would still be flown around in Connies and B707's.

For engine buffs the version of the CFM for the 707 was the never-produced CFM56-1. Later it was enlarged and became the very successful CFM56-2 for the KC135/E6 et al.
