Should I upgrade?

If you want to upgrade because of the ATC, don't do it, you won't be statisfied of it.

If you want to upgrade because of better GFX, do it, you will be statisfied of it.

There are speculations about the next flighsim being produced for next year (2006) but I shouldn't count too much on it.

Conclusion: if you can wait a year and continue with FS2002, don't buy it. If you really want it, no matter the bad ATC, do it.

Just wait to 2006. I think I'll maybe wait till 2008 or something.

Yes. I will never go back to FS2002.

And buy Radar Contact v4 and Ultimate Traffic if you want very good ATC with realistic traffic around you.

I never flew in FS2002, but I would never ever install a previous version of FS. FS2004 is just so beautiful with the clouds etc.

As said before, do not upgrade for the ATC, I said it already a lot of times, but flying online gives you the real feeling, nothing is better.

I would say : upgrade to FS2004 and go fly online 8)

I'll second that one! My advice would be to wait for just another year, as the improvements from fs2002 to fs 2004 are not that big. Anyway, I don't expect fs2006 to bring about a great evolution either...

Well most of the add-ons, either freeware or payware, are for fs2004!

So if I were U, I would, just because the fs2004 community now pretty much exclusively works for fs2004!

Well, the only update I skipped was fs2000, exactly for the reason you mention there Vinnie-Winnie: by the time a new release is out for a few months, the vast majority of add-ons are for the newest version. Thus, I tend to wait a little, until the new version can outperform my current one, and then I make the switch...

You can read first details about Flight Simulator X here.

You can see the release date at the bottom: February 2006 (for what it is worth of course, still no word from MS  )

Again, no word from MS so first see then believe 8) . Anyway, I'm not impatient, changing all the addons again .

Those 2 "solutions" for upgrading above are both illegal (the library thing also, did they pay your *personal one-user one-computer* license?), please do not post that if you want a long future for FS. Thanks...

jan_olieslagers wrote:Thanks to all who replied. Since FS X is (informally, indeed, but yet...) somewhere in 2006 I'll certainly not go for FS2004. On the other hand FS X only brings promises of better graphics so no reason to upgrade, for me; at least not with the information now available.

Hmmm, I don't agree, I think the monotone graphics of FS2004 (especially if you fly outside of the USA) could be much better, much more realistic. They don't have to be photoreal, just not so monotone.
Also if I read in the article of PCMagazine that there will be moving traffic on the ground, much more movement at airports etc, that would add immensely to the realism of our flightsim.
Ofcourse, I realise that better graphics require stronger hardware, unless they improve their texture engine. And their priority n°1 should be more realistic atc, specially in Europe.

FS X

Looking for more info on a possible new edition of FS, I found this on a forum, posted by John Goodwin (on 26/10/2005):
I recently attended the AVSIM convention in San Diego where a member of the MSFS development team gave a talk on "possible future developments of MSFS". This was really interesting and covered a lot of different subjects. Some I will list here:-

1/ There was at the time of the conference (end Sept 2005), NO planned release date for the next, if there is going to be, release of MSFS.
2/ If or when there was a release, no name had been given to it.
3/ The "possible future developments", read into that as you wish, of MSFS would include the use of Direct X 10 and make better use of the capabilities of new graphics cards on the market.
4/ More "possible future developments", included wet runways and taxiways. Improved texturing of aircraft to give the feel of a better "3D" effect. Better effects wgen the aircraft or scenery is back lit by the sun.
5/ NO mention was made about improving AI ATC control or infact ATC control in general (seperation, procedures ect).
6/ No mention was made about AI control in general
7/ No mention of radical improvements in flight models or effects.

He did describe in detail how to get the best out of FS9 (this was the real subject of the talk).

1/ Do a compact install of Windows XP
2/ Have the best machine and graphics card you can afford (bit obvious that one)
3/ Keep the installation of other programs and utilities to the minimum
4/ His recommended FPS rate was to lock it at 20 fps, his logic was that at this rate the sim works smoothly, as processor time was released to carry out other tasks apart from rendering the graphics. If your machine can not maintain 20fps then he recommended to use the sliders to achieve 20 fps. He did say that if your machine can achive 20fps+ then the best way to set the machine was to go to an airport that drops your frame rate down and set the FPS lock to a figure 1 or 2 FPS LOWER than your lowest average rate.

I think that is about it, apart from don't hold your breath, if or when a new version is released the only people that will know and supply it's release date will be Microsoft. Anything you hear apart from MS is bull***t.

Oh, and linking it to a future release of Windows was also rejected.......
As you can read, there will be no FS10 any time soon! In any case, we can't expect a new edition before Win Vista has gone final, which is still a long time from here - based on what I've seen in one of the latest beta editions.

As commented before, we'd need to start a whole new collection of add-ons to go with the new FS, so I'm still happy flying with FS2K4 8)
