I read earlier that china was about to purchase 70 but since the article suggests upto 150 i thought id make a new topic for such a huge order.

Because the initial intent appears to be to purchase 150 aircraft of the boeing 737 family. However, they only bought 70 of them, combined with an intent to purchase another 80 in the future...and now, they intent to buy new aircraft with approx. the same capabilities. Thus, I relied on advanced mathematics and calculated 150(initial intent) - 70(previous order) = 80(my forecast for airbus order)
I'm not saying this is correct, just giving my forecast based on what I read

Airbus is setting a new record in its 20 years of close cooperation with the Chinese civil aviation industry by signing a General Terms Agreement (GTA) for the purchase of 150 A320 family aircraft. The 150 aircraft will be delivered to six Chinese airlines, including Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, and Hainan Airlines.
No surprising. After Airbus announced it will set up a final assembly line in China, China returns a favor by placing a big order. Airbus is happy now. But the battle between B777 and A340 to win order from Qantas seems a crucial one for Airbus. My bet is Qantas will go for Airbus since after loosing to win orders from Emirates and Cathay, and probably SIA Airbus has no choice but taking loss of profits to win Qantas.

Sorry China did indeed take 150 A320s...
It seems like Airbus has offered some serious discounts on the A340 to make it 'so competitive' to the 777 because for other airlines it seems like a no brainer 777... I wonder whether Airbus is offering the current A340s or the A345E/A346E which wont' be in service until 2011... However although i hope Airbus will win QF, QF did request Boeing to develop the 772 advanced range or something which can fly the moon distance, so, sadly, i must admit i think QF will go for Boeing afterall...

Just my 2 cents though

actually the Boeing deal is still ongoing and this order is not a replacement.
The Chinese being wise in the ways of business, usually plays both ends against the middle, an ancient chinese proverb says.

Here's a bit of stunning news, China has not ordered any aircraft at all.
Airbus has confirmed that yesterday's agreement with China was preliminary, and that it does not yet have any actual orders for the aircraft.
