Post by luchtzak »

Dubai is planning to build the biggest airport in the world with the Jebel Ali Airport. Construction will cost around 8.300.000.000 USD (or 7.000.000.000 €) and will be able to handle 120.000.000 passengers and 12.000.000 tons of cargo. Here is the official press-release: Dubai International Airport City project at Jebel Ali announced; work to begin in February

Wow amazing they are going to do it then, I remember reading the proposals to this a while back. What i dont understand is if im not mistakened are they not still updating the current Dubai .. with a huge investment in new terminal and parking etc... I realise Emirates will need this for the expected A380S but still ... 8O All makes for an intresting read.

Its just too ambitious...
Sure, Dubai is growing as an aviation hub, but I don't think the port will ever have that kind of traffic. And btw, how many mini-cities can Dubai have? I thought the 'Aquatic city" (I don't know what its exactly called, its all over the TV) was ambitious enough.

The costs, plans and expectations are huge. But the cost is not important they are pumping money out of the soil.

But it was also expected if the want receive all those A380's and B777 and more of those gigantic airplanes.

sounds like malaysia's megalomania....

among othert projects there, also the new KL airport was way too big/ambitious (nice at that though) - with a copycat use of a 'train' to link terminals which could easily be obsolete with the right design ....

there are many parallels with malaysia come to think of it... (also F1 ambitions etc)

Why can't they just make improvedments to the existing airport, which I might add is pretty darn good? If they really need a new airport, do they really need and more importantly, can they operate the world's largest airport!!!
Dubai is a major hub, but I don't see it replacing Heathrow or Frankfurt as the world's biggest hubs, not ever...

We look at it from a temporarely point of view. We don't have the vision. But how is New York been created? Los Angeles, San Franscisco...
What seems very artificially and unviable to us - today - might turn out differently within 20 years. A ceetein moment in time, Dubai and its staelites will become so big , with some many inhabitants, that people actually go to Dubai for business, leasure, living, study. At that moment Dubai will not be a hub anymore, but a major world destination.
Alexandria in Egypt is a good example how 2350 years ago, people had a vision to create a major city, transit place, living place, trading harbour. For many years Alexandria which was created artificially was the capital of the Mediterinean.
