predicting rway usage based on METAR and TAF

Post by killerwhale65 »

i wanna learn to predict runway usage based based on TAF and METAR available at http://www.piloten.be (see my other topics)

right now (20.40 local) i get this info:
METAR
14/10/2003 17:50
EBBR 141750Z 09008KT CAVOK 10/04 Q1027 NOSIG

TAF
14/10/2003 18:00
EBBR 141800Z 141904 08010KT CAVOK
I would conclude a runway usage of 07R/02, because TAF predicts an average of 10kts for more then 2 hours.

1. Did i made the right conclusion?
2. Is this combination actually used at this time?

thanks, and i will do more of these posts when winds change a bit, as for now we will have this combo for the rest of the week most likely :)

Hi,

All I can say is that on tuesday, departing aircraft were using 07L (mostly cargo aircraft but also a pax plane now and then) and 07R while incoming aircraft used 02.

I did see 2 Hercules aircraft land (or fly by - couldn't see the whole procedure) on 07L as well...

Matthias,

you are totally right about your conclusions. Maybe you can also check the weather on television. If you see that the winds are blowing from the sea to the inland you will have runway 25L and 25R.

ciao,

BTW, just passed EBBR runway 02 and stood there for about 30 minutes and of the 5 aircraft that landed, 2 made a go around. (MD11 and S2000). Maybe strong winds today?

The winds must blow a bit heavier, lets say in the order of force 7-8, to make aircraft go around. Today we had a force of 4.
Tower always has difficulties when "using 02", in fact they hate it, because of use of only one rwy for landing. So the go arounds must be purely found on the "heavy traffic" f.e. an aircraft that after its landing didn't clear the rwy fast enough. This occurs mostly when there was slightly not enough separation between the landing aircraft. Also "the tower gets nervous" when al lot of traffic is coming in, so they use absolute minimum separations, to get as much traffic on the ground in a certain time window.

You can find the METAR and TAF data by clicking on the following links:

METAR: http://weather.noaa.gov/pub/data/observ ... s/ICAO.TXT

TAF: http://weather.noaa.gov/pub/data/foreca ... s/ICAO.TXT

These 2 links will generate 404-errors (page not found).
Instead of ICAO, you type the ICAO four-letter code of the airport.
Attention: you have to type the code and the ".TXT" in capitals, otherwise you don't get the data.

Greetings,
Raf

One of the better sites for knowing all metars & short/long tafs: http://www.phd.nl/aviation/wx/

Or in one list: http://www.tmdg.co.uk/cgi-bin/auth/afinfo?ALLM=EBBR
If U change the last four (capital) letters by another ICAO code, U get the info of your choice.
