flying on EK and JU: what can i expect?

flying on EK and JU: what can i expect?
well for the first time ever i will fly long haul on my own.
i fly to BEG with EK and JU connecting from DXB.
what should i expect with the airlines?
i have heard some bad comments on JU, and good ones.
has anyone had an experience they would like to share.
Also, the flight is from MEL and will fly on the A345 non-stop both ways to/from DXB. B733 for the JU flights.

Jugoslovenski Aero Transport
EK are pretty good and you get the A345 which means you will most likely get the most recent version of the IFE system called ICE - brilliant system. I have been on a couple of T7 Emirates flights this year and they have been fine despite grumblings about the 10 abreast seating. I don't notice much difference to be honest but you won;t have to worry about it. The airbus should be pretty comfy. Food can be hit and miss - I usually find catering out of DXB is pretty bad whichever airline you go on....out of MEL I can;t comment. I also know nothing about JAT....does that flight stop in Kuwait or Beirut or something?

JAT has been suffering because of war, embargo,etc.
It flies older B737, BUT they a very well maintained (I've read somewhere JAT won last safety award for its maintainance!).
Lunch is OK (not more, not less) Fruitjuice excellent.
IFE: not available, take a book!
Cabin crew helpful and friendly.
Pilots like to make very smooth "kiss landings" like private pilots!

Which airline is JU?
Never been on EK but if hearsay is acceptable, you could expect a decent flight overall in terms of catering :yummie: and IFE, though the cabin crew may occasionally have attitude issues. (Again this is hearsay and not what I have experienced).

used EK DUS-DXB-BKK last year. Economy. Clean planes, narrow seats and small seat pitch. IFE box is a killer.
A lot of different food on the tray. Good service. friendly. Dubai airport is okay. Long walks, indifferent personnel.
Good you are in an airbus. Try to have a seat at the side because they sit only 2.
Not my favourite airline - which still is Swiss.

Anecdotal info: I flew Jugoslav Aero Transport many moons ago when it was common practice to shut down - yes, shut down - an engine in flight to conserve fuel... I visited Beograd earlier this year and noted that the once 1st-rate aviation museum located at the airport had fallen into a poor state. Too bad, as it houses some of the most interesting and historical aircraft I've come across in my travels.

Forgive me if I am wrong but I always thought shutting down an engine in flight increases fuel consumption as the plane may have to lose height, to function properly on the remaining engine(s). Doesn't this increase maintenance costs on the remaining engine(s) that may be forced to overwork?

yeah, a nice long nonstop flight from MEL to DXB. 2 hour stop in DXB should be good, as i have heard. As for the JAT flight, since March this year they stop in Kuwait for 40 minutes to refuel and to let off / bring on passengers. Too far to fly nonstop on a 7+ hour flight on a B733.
As for the russian planes, for some reason, JAT tries to stay away from Russian planes as much as possible. As far as i know, they haven't ever used Russian planes in their flight. Sad too see. Even during the communists days.
When JU get the new A319's, they will be used on this route. There has been a roumour that JU will fly their B763 to DXB next year. Big mistake if they do.

Actually, JAT did use Soviet/Russian aircraft way back in the day. In fact, a report I viewed many years ago named JAT as having the most "diverse" fleet of aircraft in a "modern day" airline. The report went on to say that this was a prime factor in the overall lack of success of the airline due to the lack of spares and poor maintenance for so many different aircraft. JAT kept a couple of AN-2's and YAK-40's off to the side on the BEG ramp well into the mid-90's.
