New engine trouble again for Ryanair

I boarded today FR7924 to depart at 11h50. Prestwick (Scotland) to Charleroi by Ryanair. We were ready for departure at 12h10, already 20 minutes late.
But the message came through that the engine didn't start. So a technician was called. 20 minutes later came the verdict: a part in the starter was broken and repair would take about 2 hours - or another airplane would come from Dublin.
Passengers were deboarded. No vouchers were given.
At 14h30 came the message we had to board again. We finally left at 15h00. The plane was another one. The first 737-800 was still standing there in the rain.
Now a detail: when I deboarded I heard very clearly say a ground technician to people in the cockpit " than it is a matter of maintenance"
I have heard enough, O'Learry. A matter of maintenance. I suppose they were not talking about the new roads from Prestwick to Glasgow. Or the Ducati sportsbike of the pilot.
Instead off organising lotteries you should maintain your airplanes. How many engines must break down before or during flight untill you pay for good maintenance?

It looks like Mr Ryanair will not agree with you...

I really think you should look at what you wrote and what you heard. I mean, it is a matter of maintenance. I guess that is correct as you took another plane. The plane has to go in maintanence. That's what they say. The technician would not start saying this is a problem because of bad maintenance. Ryanair as all other airlines in Europe are controlled closely and the authorities will not allow bad maintenance. Even better, companies like Ryanair are watched a lot more closely then other regular airlines as they offer low prices and people are sceptic about it. So I'm sure the planes from ryanair are well maintained. Maybe if you don't believe so you should fly with another airline. What is more important to you, fly with a broken plane or with another plane that is 100% to fly with? Somethimes I ask that question to passengers when they are getting pissed because of technical delays. I ask them if time is more important then their safety. Think about it! Also don't fly Ryanair if you doubt about that company, just choose another one but don't complain then if you have to pay more or if the other airline will have an technical problem.

We had an engine starter malfunction on a Sabena 737-200 a long time ago, during particularly nasty snowy weather.

Come to think of it, engine starter maintenance is probably a relatively safe maintenance item to skimp on, isn't it? Are those starters needed for anything at all, once the engine is running?

Still I have to ask: What must happen before the customers are ready to pay a certain price for a safe journey (maintenance, crew, ...)?

I agree with waldova, it very important for LCC that they maintain a respectful level of quality just to make the public aware that although they fly low cost they still can fly safe.. I beleive it just coincidence this week, if you have over 50 aircraft running its normal that you have at one stage a breakdown.. especially with new egines fitted..

I dont like Ryanair practices on pricing side although I just want to defende the LCC model here..

Thank you, André, for being quicker than me! That article was the background for my remark about how many engines still have to break down.
For the other remarks: yes , you are right. I have made up my mind . I fly 15 years and it was my first Ryanair flight. In this case it was the best connection. Price was not the first option, because the company paid for it.
The result for me and the company is that I could not do a company visit in Courcelles anymore. Add on the food and drinks, and also the very high parking fee with an extra 3.5 hours, and the bill is getting higher and higher.
I have learned my lesson. BA, BMI or SNBA will be my supplier of service next time.

and that Ryanair lie about italian strikes: we got another plane, the previous one was still next to us on the tarmac.
I suppose they hid themselves after the fact that the good plane might have come with some delay from Italy. Might, who knows?

There we go again... Someone 'heard' something, and immediately it is proof of lousy maintenance at FR. "Yawn"
It just isn't possible, their reputation & AOC would be out the door before you could count to 2.

Planes have problems all the time. Just because it's an FR plane doesn't mean it's due to bad maintenance.

Some of the comments made on this link are beyond belief. No one here has any idea whether Ryanair maitenance is good bad or indifferent. All airlines have engine problems. To make the comments made here is quite ridiculous. I have made between 400-500 flights with FR. Never once have I experienced a tech problem. As to the person who started this link I have to say you are obviously a nervous passenger and should try one of the courses offered on line to clam your nerves, and perhaps some forthought before making such ridiculous claims would not go amiss.

Rui, it was the first time I flew Ryanair after 15 year flying all over the world with different airlines among them also LCC such as Nokair, Airasia and Kulula. If there is an engine problem, well, be it. When I report the words of the ground technician , well be it. Why do you consider me to be a nervous passenger? I just reported facts. If Ryanair claims that the plane departed late because of an italian computer failure, I say they lie. That particular plane did not depart.
And the emergency landing at Malmo because of a broken engine is also reported by a nervous passenger?
If you say that you had 400 flights on Ryanair without any technical hickup, I bluntly say you lie. There is not one airline you can have 400 flights without problems.

As to the "man" who called me a liar..Come on over to London and tell me that.....I can show you all the flights on my accounts - we have to hold them here for 7 years. I commute between London STN and LTN and BGY, Genoa, Forli, Verona Brescia. and if I add the flights of my partner we can add another 200.... and no troubles there. I work in London and live in Italy. I had in all that time - two cancellations...Snow at STN - which is famously documented and fog once at Brescia when the plane was overhead - diverted to Genoa and flew back empty. I purposefully registered because I found your remarks totally idiotic. There is such a snobbery in knocking FR. Because of FR i run an office in both Italy and UK, I am able to look after my aged Mother and have a family life in Italy...all this since FR came along. In that time I have flown from Milan BA, BD and AI too (sometimes at peak they are cheaper - i.e school hols) and believe me I have experienced more delays due to tech problems. I am also a LH frequent flyer. Young man I am not a liar and not a novice with a fast mouth.....I am also a business man - 55 years old...I know what I am talking about and you obviously as they say are a shit stirrer for the sake of it.

I second Waldova, Buzz and Rui1950.

The fact that engine or other technical problem occur doesn't always mean lack or bad maintenance.

The truth is that if it happens to Ryanair or any other (for any reason) unpopular Airline, the alligations are made here before the news is spread.

A kind of narrow thinking prejudge ? Yes !

I totally agree with you. Anyway, every day technical problems happen with airlines. But when it comes indeed to LCC, everybody directly starts to point and state that these airlines are not maintaining their aircraft as they should. I think this comes because many people in aviation are afraid of these airlines as they offer trully competitive prices and still are making profite, while the regular airlines are often more expensive and some of them (especially in the states) are losing money. I have flown on a lot of times on Vueling and a few times Ryanair and I most say they have always been good experiences. Nothing to complain about and I would trully tell anybody that it is really worth flying with them!

okay, I got the message. The delay of 3.5 hours yesterday was not a delay but just a gesture by Ryanair to enjoy the departure hall for some extra hours. The remark by the ground crew that it was a matter of maintenance was not made. I must have misinterpreted it. And the passengers on the emergency landing at Malmö are not allowed to speak out because they knew they flew with a LCC.
I got your point.
Sorry to have mentioned some truth.
