Monday evening, while the ac was taxiing to the runway, two vehicles from the fire department of Brussels Airport were ready to give a shower. The Etihad-Airbus was waiting for 10 minutes, but no shower... maybe they had some problems.

Maybe you should've watched a bit longer my friend ;-) ! It indead took ages, and was less spectacular then usual ( for e.g. with the VG airlines maiden flight ), but it got a salute from the fire brigade, I assure you :-)

I was at YYZ today, terminal 1, and I say both Etihad airways and SN Brussels airlines desks beside each other. I smiled at the ladies behind the counter, and said "Thank god, this new terminal is huge, and needs to be filled by good airlines!".

Here in BRU, this morning when on approach, they didn't. The only thing he said was: "Approach, good day, Etihad 502 is type Airbus 330, with you..."

The definitely used heavy as they are doing right now, with flight Air Canada 848 heavy (Boeing 767-London) and 090 heavy (Boeing 767-Sao Paulo)..

The aircraft just arrived at the gate and cabin cleaning is still waiting outside.

This picture is taken a few moments before the inaugurating party started. The front cabin passengers (first & business) of this flight were invited to deboard and attend, while the economy class passengers had to stay inside the aircraft. Snacks and drinks had been prepared, while the Canadian mounted police was guarding and decorating the place.

I talked to one of the passengers on this flight. He was quite happy with this new service between AUH and Canada, because all alternatives (through LHR or FRA) require a stop over which takes many more hours than the one through BRU. This passenger did not complain about the aircraft, but he noticed that it was not exactly a new aircraft.

In the upper right corner you can see how the inaugurating party continued at the gate.

Robin, aren't you afraid you'll have a 'bad-double'-rejection, or to say it in 'pp.nets way', a 'similar shots available'-rejection ... it is just the same picture like you posted for the first arrival, only the weather is diffirent.

I was looking tonight at National Geographic, it was a docu about the crash of Swissair 111 at Halifax, Canada. And I noticed that they also used the term 'heavy' when they speak about the airline and nr.
Is this maybe typical when they are flying at Canada to use the term 'heavy'?

I saw that documentary as well tonight ;-)

Anyway, the reason why they always say heavy is very simple. There are three classes of planes classified as follows (ICAO):

Heavy: 136tons < MTOW
Medium: 7tons<MTOW<136tons
Light: MTOW <= 7tons

Planes belonging o the heavy category usually say the word heavy behind the callsign, so everybody knows that it's a heavy. This can be of high importance during approach and take off phases for separations between planes. Heavies usually develop much more wake turbulence then light planes ;)

In the US the term heavy is used for all a/c with a take off weight of over 255,000 pounds, including the B757 (for its wake turbulence).

So B767, A330, b747, b777, a340, dc10, C5 etc are examples of heavies and are referred as such in ATC transmissions.

As you've already seen on Robin's picture, it was very good weather when 'our' Etihad arrived in BRU. I was at 127bis, of course took some pics. Here are the links:

Hope you all enjoy the pics.

OK, that's it for now for me. Enough hunting the Etihad; following days, I really need to do some schoolwork...

Best regards,
Wim

I'd like to point out, Toronto finished the new part of the terminal just in time for this arrival. It was blocked by the old temrinal 1 before.
