Could not make it, but thanks to the pics of glider and MD11 it is as if I was there ... Great moment.

Maybe I'll try tomorrow when she comes back from Toronto ...

Time for a tribute to this first EY501/SN8102 arrival at BRU.

I suppose that I was the first member to see here. At a couple of minutes after 5PM. The A332 was on a low approach to Brussels when she crossed the Belgian Eastern border. The only thing I could see was a shape of an A332. Too badly I had not my camera with me. I expected here 20 min later.

Greetz,

Dave

It was awesome! She came in very smoothly and taxied right away to the gate.

At app. 1910 she bounded for YYZ, final destination of the day.

Great departure from 25R!

It was indeed fantastic to see that nice bird at BRU. Finaly after months talking about that first flight to BRU, and than we saw it, amazing.
But, as expected it was a little bid dark. When the weather is fine tomorrow I try it again when he will depart to Abu Dhabi again.

But, as expected: no vice president from BIAC Luc Van den Bossche; no ceo from BIAC Wilfried Van Assche, on the inaugral ceremony and event this evening in terminal B. Business as usual at BIAC....

Etihad launches Brussels, Toronto route in Style

Post by flightsimboy »

Abu Dhabi: A new era of Middle East–Trans-Atlantic air travel has begun with the launch of Etihad Airways’ service to Toronto, via Brussels. The inaugural Etihad flight EY 501 took off as scheduled at 13.05 on Monday, amidst great celebrations, from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

H.E Dr Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saif Al Nahyan, Chairman of the UAE National Airline and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Civil Aviation Department, was joined by H.E. Philippe Dartois, Belgian Ambassador to the UAE, and H.E. W. David Hutton, Canadian Ambassador to the UAE, for the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon.

“This is an historic day for Etihad Airways and the entire UAE. Guests of Etihad will now be able travel in style three times a week between the Middle East, Europe and North America which will see an unprecedented increase in business and leisure opportunities,” said H.E Dr Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saif Al Nahyan.

“This new route once again offers the people of Abu Dhabi and the UAE the opportunity to travel in the height of luxury and style to the world’s most popular international destinations. Etihad hopes to add New York as a route in 2006, ensuring Abu Dhabi’s continued role as a leading global hub,” the Chairman added.

Etihad will fly three times a week — Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday — to Toronto via Brussles, and guests will enjoy the Etihad hospitality on an A330-200 aircraft configured to accommodate 18 guests in the Diamond Zone, 36 guests in the Pearl Zone and 171 guests in the Coral Zone.

The new route opens up a range of travel options for Etihad guests. Etihad Airways’ code-share agreement with SN Brussels Airlines enables the airline’s guests to fly to a greater number of important European cities like Rome, Lyon, Strasbourg, Geneva, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Oslo, Berlin, Tempelhof, Hamburg and Vienna, among other important European destinations.

@flightsimboy: did they include the 'heavy' every time after the callsign?

About the inaugural A332: I was very surprised when I saw that A6-EYB operated the first flight, as this is one of the old TAM-aircraft they lease (equipped with the old TAM seats as far as I know).

Why not one of their latest additions, like A6-EYE (equipped with state of the art IFE etc.)?

Here are the first figures of the flights:

Abu Dhabi - Brussels: airplane was complete full

Brussels - Toronto: airplane was 3/4 full.

It means that the flights from UAE to BRU and back are very important. For some people, business and leisure is BRU their final destination. I'm curious for the figures in the next coming monts.

Hi Atlantis,

Where did you get the figures from? Is it possible to monitor figures of specific routes or is it 'internal' info?

Figures are quite impressive for a first flight. I guess this is because there were a lot of special guests (journalists, business, ...)?

Wait for the next few days and weeks ...

I was also pleased about the figures. I have this direct info from the site of TM: Travel Magazine.

Nice photo. And now a bit off topic: why was the UA 763 still at BRU then?

Anyway, would love to see the EY bird at BRU in the future.

Those are indeed impressive figures. But even if they advertised a lot before the first flight I doubt that most of them were normal pax.

As said before there were probably many guests and journalists invited on the first flight.

Anyway, let's hope the LF's stay as high with good yields :)

All the best to EY

ua950/31oct arrived late (+-1200lt) due technical probs ex IAD

first plan was to depart 31oct around 1330lt, but then postponed to 01nov 0700lt. reason : technical.

As I'm off duty, no further info.

About EY : did it get a water salute. I heard that no festivities so far as ramadan not over yet. Official inauguration around nov 17th. Will update if more info.
motorcycling : sensation with a twist of the wrist

Here in BRU, this morning when on approach, they didn't. The only thing he said was: "Approach, good day, Etihad 502 is type Airbus 330, with you..."
