Does anybody know how long the certification procedure will take, and with how many airframes they will collect the necessary flight hours?

4 aircraft will be used, here is a nice article on fatigue tests on the A380.

according to luchtvaartnieuws.nl they will use 5 aircrafts:
In totaal worden bij het testvliegprogramma van de A380 vijf toestellen betrokken. Naast MSN001 en MSN004 worden twee toestellen - voorzien van een volledige passagierscabine - gebruikt ten behoeve van onder meer cabine- en geluidstesten en operationele tests. Een vijfde A380 wordt gebruikt voor testvluchten met de nieuwe Engine Alliance GP7200 motor. Alle andere prototypes zijn voorzien van Rolls Royce Trent 900's.

MSN001 and MSN004 are current in use with instruments in the cabin installed.. 2 other aircrafts will be equipped with normal passengercabins to test noise and operational use. the 5th aircraft will be used to test the Engine Alliance GP7200 engines. ( the other 4 a380`s use the RR trent 900 engines )

It's nice to see some other A380's as well now. And the two A380's with the SQ tails are wonderful. I can't wait to see them in full SQ colours and to see them flying :)

Let's hope they won't have further delays during the certification process

It's one of the test-planes, so I guess no company will get this one.

There appears to be conflicting opinions coming from the Bosses at Airbus.

airbus a380

Post by dc1030 »

I have heard that the wake of the a380 can cause problems for smaller planes taking off behind it.causing delays at major airports, because of the wait for clearance. Is that true?

Very true, wake turbulence has been blamed for many aircraft incidents, some of them fatal.

All large Aircraft cause some degree of wake turbulence, and depending on the size it can be mild to severe. The A380 being a new aircraft, is currently undergoing many tests, and wake testing is one of them.

Doppler lidar and laser beam distortion are among many methods used to determine the severity.

Contrary to popular belief the turbulence usually does not always remain directly behind the aircraft, but can drift up, down, or side to side, and at some Airports such as SFO where the runways are only 650 feet apart, the turbulence can affect aircraft landing or departing on the adjoining runway.
