Aircraft seats - where to buy

Post by CLW_aviator »

Hello,

Recently I`ve seen on Lufthansa`s website that they sell aircraft seats from their planes. I found this quite interesting (but... expensive!). I was wondering... where else could I buy such seats (from a passenger airplane)? I found Sicma Aeroseat website, but I think they wouldn`t sell a single seat for a private customer... And please tell me, how expensive are such seats?

Thank you. Best regards,

I did once a small surveye on aircraft seat manufacturers. And there are very few of them around. First of all their market is very limited. Secondly the manufacturing method of an aircraft seat is completely different than e.g. a car seat. The materials are different, the demands are different. The tests can take years. The fabrics must be fire retardant. The used materials must be light.
In this respect we see for the frames still a lot of metals been used such as aluminium. Also steel tube with a high tensile strength.
Here are some websites giving you enough reading material to spend some days.
the best of the best:
http://www.recaro.com They supplied the MD-11 of Swiss with the ultra thin but comfortable seats, in the pre personnal TV time.

Quite interesting is that we see that the manufacturers often avoid metal castings and machine by milling some structural components. (which is at least 10 times more expensive!)
Also strange is that we don't see a breakthrough by high performance plastics such as carbon fibre or PEEK pressure die castings. (PEEK = poly ether ether ketone and is a very strong plastic that can be pressure die cast. It has been used recently in the car manufacturing business e.g. Ford uses it to replace metal stampings on the hand break levier. A Belgian company makes some special pressure die castings in very small quantities for military cockpit parts : Feronyl at Moeskroen.

I think it would be nice to have one of those A380 first class suites installed at home. Anyone selling those yet? :)
