United Airlines B777 and A320 rides

Post by A318 »

Well I am back again from my trip to Florida after I met Katrina as a category 1 hurricane in For Lauderdale.
Believe me when I say it were again 2 spectacular (not scarry) days especially due to the power loss.
However this was my 2nd hurricane because last year we were 3 days hiding for hurricane Francis.

But this is not about hurricanes but about flying and for me a special occasion since this were my first flights with a 777 and A320.
First the 777 which was not really what I expected, the flight from AMS to IAD vv gave me enough reasons.

The inside cabin with it's curved ceiling looked for me a copy from the 767-400 but wider.
With it's 2-5-2 configuration in economy class I was really surprised about the small pitch between the seats, really narrow. The 764 from Delta gives a lot more space when you are seating economy class.
For the rest nothing special, yeah it is a big plane, has PTV's (which are really not important at all to me) but noise inside is for me the same as in a 767.
Smart from United is to add an extra Economy plus class which gives you the normal economy class pitch but you have to pay more for it, a bummer in my point of view.

Then the flight on the A320 IAD-FLL vv operated by TED the low cost arm from United.

I was amazed, impressed and shamed because I was a big defender from the 737 all the time but this was not correct at all.
I still think the 737 is an amazing good, reliable airplane but the A320 wins for comfort at all fronts.
Take off went smooth with a lot less noise then I am used to on small body aircraft.
In flight the plane was very stable and didn't react to nervous on turbulence.
Pitch was marvelous, even bigger then I had on the 777!!!!!!!!!
Seats were comfortable and we had 757 style screens on board (the ones that turn out the top panels on top of your head).
So my nick already said it but I am happy that I can stand firm behind my nick since this big brother gave me more then I expected.

General conclusion from all flights with United Airlines:
A very good, reliable airline with a perfectly on time performance.
All departures were on time and arrivals were 20 to 30 minutes ahead of schedule
Service on board is good, food is okay with choices of chicken and pasta.
Drinks as much as you want but for alcoholic beverages you need to pay.
If you need connecting flights at IAD keep in mind you need 1,5 hour for all immigration/security work.
The 777 didn't bring me what I expected, the flight was good and pretty comfortable but I had really no space at all in economy class.
As you already found out the A320 surprised me completely, what a wonderful, comfortable airplane is that ;)

Great report!

Surprised the 777 isn't that amazing it looks so good from the outside! Wow 2+5+2 seats! Would love to sit at the window but surely not in seat number 5!

U seem to be bringing hurricanes with u btw :)

Thanks for sharing this nice report with us, I really enjoyed reading it. I'm glad that you are sattisfied with United Airlines, now they just need to pull themselves out of bankruptcy, they have a product that deserves it.

I've flown a lot of times on both types of aircraft, and this summer I also flew on the A320 and B737-400 and to be honest, I did not note any difference in comfort (although the A320 is roomier). Maybe the B737 let's one feel the bumps more, but I did not notice that. But I have to admit that I'm someone who can be sattisfied very fast.

I think that the A320 engines make an irritating sound on take-off, and I did not notice that on the B737. It could be that the A320's I flew had other engines then the one you flew.

Very nice report.

That is still better than the Thai 3-4-3(=10) configuration between HKT and BKK...

I agree with you. I have flown on A320s and A319s with NWA several times and they have all made that annoying buzzing sound. I have also noticed that they are considerably noiser than 737s and MD-8x aircraft. The 757 is the quietest out of all of them though .

Please don't confuse airplane types with comfort because comfort has all to do with the airline that you fly with and not the airplane type. Takeoff smoothness and smooth cruise has to do with the weather and the pilots flying, not the airplane. Also, the 764 cabin was modeled off of the 777. Just an F.Y.I. :)

Thanks for the nice trip report, Erwin!

Out of curiosity: how was the service on TED like? Buy on board, or a drink service for free with additional items (like sandwiches) for sale?

You don't necessarily have to pay more to be seated in Economy Plus on UA: Silver/Gold status with a Star Alliance FF programme is OK as well ;)

the noise in an airplane depends where you are seated. If you are sittibng next to the engine in the MD80 you are deaf, up front you don't even hear the engine...

@ Sabena_690:
I flew Ted and was also amazed by the marvelous seat pitch. I think rows 1-18 are economy plus, 18-?? are normal economy seats. On my ride I got one free coke and some pretzels. You could buy inflight snacks and meals, but you had to pay a lot of $$$$$ to get something (wich is quite usual with other airlines too, indeed).

General opinion: very statisfied, since it stays a lo-co. Marvelous seat pitch, smiling (and experienced) crew and on time arrivals/departures. (this was in April 2004)

@ Avro:
Channel 9 live ATC is great, especially for an aviation enthousiast who understeands most of the things. Though it's a little bit ennoying it's turned off just before switching to the Approach-frequency of your destination airport.

UA 767 & 777

Post by UAFlyer »

UA 777 is among the oldest 777 produced by Boeing. They are all 200 models. Most of these 777 have been in services for many years. Some of them already started to show signs of aging.

On the other hand, the latest version of 767's flown by ANA are very nice compared to any aircraft in the market. Personnally I think they are more modern and comfortable than A340. The new 767 incorporated the same interio of the 777. I don't understand why most airlines ignored 767 and went for A330, an uncomfortable plane during turbulence. it seems that every Airbus model was designed so that passengers have to tough out the turbulence.

Nice trip report :!:

I totally agree. I flew in some of their B777s last July and their interior began to show ageing signs and moreover my PTV wasn't working properly.
Only one thing annoyed me was the box for the PTV located under the front seat in Economy. But their Economy Plus is great (far more legroom).

@Avro, yes I listened a lot on channel 9 while I was watching the map, this was a very unique experience.
The captain also switched off the seatbelt sign for a minute when we passed over NY so the people could take a fast look.

@Sabena_690, As Jense already mentioned the service from TED is very good, especially for a LCC.
On the other hand they still promote it as "the sister from" so they can not make it the totally oposite.
You received a non alcoholic beverage for free including some pretzels.
Alchol was availaible but you needed to pay for it, same as the UA flight.
They had different kind of meal boxes on board which cost $5 , which is in my opinion also not that bad.
