British Airlines / Gibraltar

Post by CN-RAM »

Hi all,

This question may seem a bit strange, but I have always wondered, what with the current situation between Spain and the UK regarding Gibraltar - are British airlines (BA, Monarch) allowed to overfly Spain (file a flight plan using recognised airways) and land in Gibraltar or must they overfly Portugal and Morocco to the west (or countries to the east)?

The current close co-operation between Iberia and BA also springs to mind....

I cant answer your question but for accuracy's sake, BA dont fly to Gibraltar with their own planes. All flights are conducted by franchise GB Airways

AFAIK Spain have to provide air control help to any airlines crusing into their airspace, since Spain is member of ICAO.

Little sumarize of the current situation:
Spain would like to take back Gibraltar from UK, Maroco would like to take back some rocks near Maroco coast from Spain, and Occidental Sahara (lot of petroleum there) would like to be free from Maroco.

Regards

Seb.

Continuing with the :offtopic: theme.
The residents of Gibraltar voted to stay as a British colony. I think about 99% of people there voted to remain British

Does anyone have any more information on GB Airways (when it was founded, advantages of franchising for BA, ...)

When I was in Air Traffic in LXGB in the late 70's, BA used to fly in twice a week with their Trident 3's!!

:offtopic: but Don't you find Gibraltar airport amazing? Crosses the main street leading to the rock so whenever a plane lands well no one can go to either Spain or Gibraltar city centre!

Planes from the UK to Gibraltar overfly Spain.

I read once that some years ago air controllers had to read a long speech (Spain's official position on the subject) to any plane which was leaving to gibraltar, much to the annoy of the flight crew. They have withdrawn this now.

GB Airways was previously known as Gibraltar Airways (or airliones ??) They changed the name so as to fly from Spain ( Murcia and other places) with a name that would not bring the Rock to mind. IIRC they also changed the headquarters to London. As a trivia fact, They fly (flew ?) the world's shortest intercontinental flight, from Gibraltar to Tanger .

They have a web site : www.gbairways.com/
