You probable did not read the link, there are different explanations about who could have shot down the aircraft. Why would have Italian Generals hold back radar recordings and other information? Relations between the US and Italy were not the best back then, so there was no need for them to cover some American ass. They would have rather see them leave from the area, and could have used this as a reason to make them go. So, that would lead us to believe that the Italians themselves have something to cover up (and thus they do not want to do a search for the wreck of the ATR-42, because THEY have something to cover).
From what the investigations showed so far, it is impossible to say of which type these were, French R.530s, US AIM-7 Sparrows, Italian Aspides (main armament of IMI’s F-104Gs) or Soviet-built AA-2-2 radar-guided Atolls?

Why does is need to be the Americans to blame? Why can't it be the Italian Air Force who shot the aircraft down (it is clearly stated that NATO fighter have participated in the hunt for the Libyan aircraft)? I'm not bashing you because you critisize the US, but you come with your theorie without any proof that the US actually did it, and you do not evne look at other possible theories. Do you have any source that can say that an American made missle struck the aircraft (and even that would not say much, many NATO Air Forces used American missiles)? No, you only know that A missile did strike the aircraft, but you can't tell who fired it. As you see, the Americans were not the only ones up there that night, and not the only ones who had the capability to have shot down that aircraft (either on purpose or not on purpose).
