Thats a very informative article you got there...
That the captain should be in control during an emergency is quite clear...
However I know many situations of copilots that were in control of their airplane during emergency situations.
I just mentioned a possibility, an opinion as others do.
Who said the pilot tried to fixed the "whole"(if it was a whole).

Until today, this year 694 people have died in aircraft crashed around the world.

Maybe the crew didn't get oxygen through their mask and the captain entered the cabin to take some portable oxygen bottles ?Tommypilot wrote: What did he do in the cabin then? I think he wanted to inspect something in the cabin...
I really doubt that a pilot would go in the cabin and inspect it when there is a decomprssion. First bring the plane back to 10000ft and then have a look if you really want to.
Chris
I think people on this forum are taking a lot of things for granted that are still mere speculation. Nobody really knows 100% that the pilot was not in the cockpit, surely if one falls on the floor of the cockpit there is enough room there for an F16 pilot not to be able to see them. After all the pilot was looking through the window at 34k feet while doing 600mph!
My take on what I read in the Greek press is that people were alive or at least some where, the plane did run out of fuel because it was in flight for almost 3.5 hrs, therefore more than the 2.5 hrs flight that it was scheduled to do. The pilots had programmed the autopilot until they reached the island of Kea (Tzia) and then it went to manual and started doing circles therefore ran out of fuel.
The F-16 pilot in their deposition in the District Attorney's Office said that someone (not sure if it was a passenger or crew) was trying to fly the plane for 23 minutes until it crashed. They brought it down to 2k! Feet and then got scared and pulled back up to 7k...
the whole thing is spooky and with the sensationalist press and media that exists in Greece and Cyprus the investigation will get worse and worse. Hopefully the BOEING guys can be the stabilising factor in the Media hysterics....
I still cannot believe some of the family stories I read about and I cannot help thinking of these people's families all the time. When I fly there on Friday I will try to stay clear and not read or watch any more of the trash that the media are so keen on serving us.

a heroic air steward may have broken into the cockpit

Andreas Prodromou, a 25-year-old qualified pilot looking for a job, was called at the last minute to work as a steward on the Helios Airways flight that crashed in hills north of Athens with the loss of 121 lives. His girlfriend was also a stewardess on the flight.

referring to the A340 overrun at Toronto, where there came no conclusive answer to what really happened, I launched the question about the old indian burial site. (sounds strange, but if the responsables don't come up with an answer, they also lose the right to decline another explanation)
This accident with all kind of unexplainable things is also leading in the direction of something different. What could be the influence of bringing old religious artefacts on board?

Well. well, well?
In Ta Nea, a greek newspaper:
- 10 minutes after takeoff the pilot mentioned a problem with the “air-conditioning for the electronics compartment”.
- the two people seen in the cockpit by the two F-16 pilots had twice attempted to take the plane in for landing at Athens airport.
- these people were guided from the ground although they could not communicate with the control tower at Athens airport. (see problem in electronics compartment)
-The crash could have been caused by these “pilots”

Indeed paps, read this: Crash causes narrowed Theory that jets shot down plane rejected, but findings could take months The wife of the plane's co-pilot, Charalambos Charalambous told Kathimerini (that's a greek newspaper) that her husband had expressed concern about the state of the aircraft on many occasions and that he kept a record of the problems it developed in a diary, which she thinks he probably had on board with him.paps wrote:I think people on this forum are taking a lot of things for granted that are still mere speculation.

Could takes month, a close to ruling out, indeed well-informed journalism....

In short: TV reports a 5 year old boy was still alive after the crash but people were not allowed to rescue the boy. One F16 made images of the plane before the crash and you can clearly see Andreas Prodromou. 3 Bodies are still not recovered.

Here is another image of the flightpath that the Helios took: http://ta-nea.dolnet.gr/data/D2005/D0818/1el9b.gif
This is potentially misleading. After crusing for close to half an hour at 34,000ft with no oxygen (after the O2 masks ran out) it is unlikely that the kid would have ever recovered, even if he could be kept "alive" in a hospital.blackhawk wrote:http://standaard.typepad.com/en_nu_even ... n_en_.html

ICAO was opposed...?
Cyprus is examining whether the airline whose plane crashed last week should have been granted an operating permit when it was founded.
"Now we are examining under which circumstances the permit was granted and we are examining also whether the ICAO was against granting the license and why that might be," Communications Minister Haris Thrassou told the English language newspaper Sunday Mail.
It is said that International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) was opposed to a private airline operating in Cyprus because local civil aviation authorities would not be able to cope.

OMG, the German television is f*cking things big time.
They try to prove their case that in the aviation industry safety standards always have been neglected to cut costs. To prove this nonsense they (off-course) present the Helios-crash, but also go back to 2000 when an Hapag-Lloyd A310 crashed just short of the Runway in Vienna due to fuel starvation. They present the 1990 incident when a British Airways Bac-1-11 lost it's window, and the case in which an Aloha Airlines B737 lost part of the fuselage.
And the reporters present all these facts as to negligence on the part of maintenance, because of the cost-pressure.
The Helios crash was questionable, but can the other crashed be blamed on bad maintenance?
Darn media.
