An Air India jumbo, touching down amidst heavy rain early this morning, overshot the runway, landing its nosewheels in grass some 10 metres away. It shut down the operational secondary runway for five hours.
The official explanation was that the ‘‘braking action’’ by the pilot of flight AI 127 was ‘‘not satisfactory’’ and hence the near-mishap. But what the officials did not reveal was that at 5:30 a.m., another Air India Boeing 747-400 had landed from Frankfurt and the pilot had a difficult time bringing the plane to a halt. The plane is now with the engineers undergoing a heavy landing check.
