I hope the flight will last for a while. YYZ doesn't have good luck with Arabian airlines. RJ & AT had YYZ flights at one time, but were discontinued.

But this time EY is codesharing with SN, and SN will probably be able to attract quite a number of people on the BRU-YYZ sector.

just my 2 cents ;)

That would be nice ;) Bart should make a very big advertisment on the airport building like Virgin did a time ago. It should sound like --> Welcome to Luchtzak.be territory

Yes that sign would be very welcome for all YYZ passengers and EY crew, not forgetting the very state of the art A330-200's that EY will be flying on the route...

I'll be available in the transit area to sign autographs... ..

I had the answer on my question I asked some posts ago.

Etihad want to fly to New York, not via Bru, it will be a direct flight.

The new route: Abu Dhabi - Brussels - Toronto was announced today by the two airlines, Etihad Airlines and SN Brussels Airlines.

As usual there was a photoshoot, conference, etc. And more important SN Brussels Airlines is looking for more long hauls. They want connect Brussels with other continents. They want operate them like this one with Etihad.

It seems that the airport is ready to play with the big ones around us.
The ball is rolling and I think that with the arrive of Etihad and also soon Jet Airways we can expect more big airlines.

Also important, Etihad has, for this moment, no traffic-rights for Canada. So, it means that SN has to fill the airplane for the flight Brussels - Toronto on his own.

Sorry for this question, but i am not completely familiair with the exact details of this deal, but are these flights operated by Etihad?

If so, why is everybody so excited and stating that SN is flying to other continents? I mean, they have had codeshares with AA, so if you want you can fly to LAX with SN???

Or is the difference the ground handling?

Thanks for replying, for i do not share the enthousiasm, I WOULD if SN announced it would fly far away, ON ITS OWN...

A copple of weeks ago on the news they said that there was a contract signed by Prince Filip and Marc Verwilghen with ANA. I hope it's THE official contract they signed.
If yes, they will probably fly from begin 2006 (according to the news).

For a big airline like ANA that's very soon if it's true that they fly from the beginning of 2006.

And about Hainan? No news for a long time about this airline, strange. Because at the beginning of this year there was a delegation of Hainan for visiting the airport. And I thought Guy Verhofstadt, when he visited the new control tower of Belgocontrol and Marc Verwilghen on Kanaal Z said that the negotiations with an Asian carrier, Hainan, are in a very good direction. But after that, nothing.

Etihad press release:

Etihad to fly to Toronto this October
28/07/2005

Abu Dhabi: After spreading its wings over the Middle East, Asia and Europe, Etihad Airways now plans to fly to its first destination in North America. Starting October 2005, the National Airline of the UAE will commence operations to Toronto via Brussels with three direct flights every week.

“We are looking forward to our first trans-Atlantic flight to North America within just two years of operations. Our flight to Canada will be a launch pad for our services to the US in the summer of 2006,” says Ian Ferguson Brown, Etihad’s Head of Communications. “This new operation reflects our commitment to place guest needs at the core of our strategic development, especially with regard to destination selection. Currently, there are no direct flights from the UAE to Canada, so this new route will provide our guests with greater flexibility when travelling to Europe and North America.”

The new route to Toronto via Brussels is expected to significantly enhance the link between the UAE, Europe and Canada, providing even more opportunities for business and tourism. Bilateral trade between Canada and the UAE is expected to double this year. The Canadian Business Council in Abu Dhabi was launched in March 2005, paving the way for even more Canadian companies to continue investing and expanding operations in the UAE, especially in the energy, environment, infrastructure and health sectors.

The launch of this new destination supports one of Etihad’s key goals of offering the people of Abu Dhabi and the UAE access to as many of the world’s capitals as possible and ensuring Abu Dhabi’s role as a hub between East and West, North and South. Etihad expects to add New York as a destination in 2006.

SN Brussels Airlines press release:

SN Brussels Airlines and Etihad Airways launch their flights between Brussels-Toronto and Abu Dhabi

Monday, July 25, 2005

From 31 October 2005, Brussels, the capital of the European Union, will be connected to Toronto and Abu Dhabi, thanks to a partnership concluded between SN Brussels Airlines and Etihad Airways, the national company of the United Arab Emirates. Three direct flights will be weekly operated between the airport of Brussels National and these two cities.

Etihad Airways and SN Brussels Airlines kick off the winter season (launched 31 October) with the launch of these new services. Three times a week, a plane of Etihad Airways will link the capital of Europe, the Canadian metropolis and Abu Dhabi, head office of Etihad Airways. Some days ago, discussions held between Etihad, SN and Biac, the managing company of the Zaventem airport, ended successfully and led to the opening of two new routes for long-haul flights.

SN Brussels Airlines will place its famous “SN” code on every flight and thus it will be able to propose to its customers direct and comfortable flights to Canada as well the capital city of the United Arab Emirates from Brussels.

Etihad Airways will operate on the Belgian market three flights to Abu Dhabi and, thanks to its excellent connections, numerous flights to destinations situated in the Gulf area and to Asia.

All flights will be operated with modern Airbus A330-200 of Etihad. These planes are configured in three zones: Diamond (First, 12 seats), Pearl (Business, 24 seats) and Coral (Economy, 180 seats). On board, Etihad’s passengers enjoy an extraordinary all-in service with a large range of meals and relaxations.

Brussels – Abu Dhabi

On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 1:45 PM, Etihad’s Airbus A330-200 will steer a course for Abu Dhabi. It will arrive at 11:20 PM (local time). The fights Abu Dhabi – Brussels will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The plane will take off

from Abu Dhabi at 1:15 PM and it will land in the European capital at 5:45 PM (local time).
Thanks to this timetable, Etihad has the opportunity to offer, from its home base, excellent connections to numerous destinations in the Middle East, in the Gulf area and in Asia. Without forgetting Dubai, easily accessible thanks to a luxurious, fast and free bus.

The configuration of the European network allows SN to propose excellent possibilities of travel to Abu Dhabi from Rome, Lyon, Strasbourg, Geneva, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Madrid, Bilbao, Oslo, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Berlin Tempelhof, Munich, Hamburg and Vienna.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The city has imposed itself as a major business centre. Its main characteristics are a modern architecture, superb shopping centres, authentic souks, green areas and a beautiful coast. Abu Dhabi attracts a growing number of tourists.

Brussels – Toronto

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the Airbus A330 of Etihad will take off from Brussels at 7:00 PM to land in Toronto at 9:45 (local time). The return flight from Toronto will also be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a landing the next day at 12:30 PM.

Thanks to these flight schedules, SN Brussels Airlines’ customers will have the opportunity to travel to Canada via Brussels at the start from different European cities like Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, Bristol, Oslo, Helsinki, Milan, Rome, Venice, Lyon, Strasbourg, Berlin Tempelhof, Hamburg, Geneva, Warsaw, Prague and Vienna.

Toronto, the biggest city of Canada, counts more than 5 million inhabitants. Airlines and numerous companies of the automobile, pharmaceutical and IT sectors are implanted there. Toronto also has an attractive tourist infrastructure and it constitutes the key destination for those who want to discover Canada.

About Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways was founded in July 2003 by a Royal Decree. The first flight of the company occurred on 12 November. Etihad means in Arabian “united”. The company name also symbolizes the union of the 7 Emirates that form United Arab Emirates. The head office of Etihad is situated at the airport of Abu Dhabi, currently in development.

Since the beginning of the activities Etihad has grown rapidly. For 2010, the company aspires to offer flights towards 70 destinations. Planes are provided as well by Boeing as by Airbus. In a record time, the company has succeeded in developing a high standing image. More information is available on the website of the company (www.etihadairways.com).

SN Brussels Airlines and Etihad Airways will sell their tickets via their own points of sell.
