Delta Air Lines: the end is near

Post by Atlantis »

It's again time that the airlines give their financial results. The second time for this year. We are now speaking for the period April - June.

And there are some surprises: AA and CO have made profit. For some of them since a couple of years. So, after reducing the fleet, fired thousands of people, reorganizations, etc.

But, there is still one with big red figures. Delta Air Lines: 382 million dollar loss in the second quatre. Chapter 11 is not far and even the management is thinking in the direction of a bankruptcy.
They are going to take 14 aircrafts out of service, some people of the management are fired. So, not good at all.

And there are difficult negotiations about the pensions. The sky above Delta is black. If they think to go on strike they are going to loose more money.

I think the end is near. I thought it also last year when they had losses of 1 milliard euro. You can imaging how big this is for an airline.

Delta Air Lines is the third airline of the USA.

Although they do not operate Airbusses, I hope they will not close
their business at all. As mentioned above they are the third biggest
airline in the US and it would be a shame if they would stop operating.

No, not at all. It was mentioned generally so no details about that. But it's still for this year and that's a lot: approx. 3 aircrafts per month!

DL is retiring 737-200/300's, 767-200's and possibly the MD90's ..

Tough time for DL. Let's hope they'll be able to recover. But I fear that one or more of the big ones will have to disappear to enable the others to be profitable again....

Delta sold one MD11 and they deferred delivery of the B737-800 to 2008 but I have nothing read about other aircraft type's they put out of service in the official statement of Delta.

About the B767-200: they fly to what kind of airports with this type?

I hope they will survive since it is a good airline which we always fly to South America.
I hope they do make it, not for my own needs but for the people that work at DL.
On the other hand, I will fly them in November and December :|

I believe the MD-90's already left the fleet when DL closed their DFW hub last year; DL only had 16 MD-90's. I used to fly them every week, the planes were equiped with nice IFE but many of my flight had delays because of technical problems.

They still have the MD-90's, all 16.

I hope also that they survive, but it's not easy. I'm a little concerned because some of the board menber's send a signal that a bankruptcy is not far away.

But, like always we have to wait what the precautions have to bring.

What's the situation after they pull out 14 aircrafts, are the discussions about the pensions coming to a happy end, what about the oil prices?

We have to wait some quatres. If they after that period still in the red, then they need chapter 11 and a bankruptcy is not far away.

I hope they can keep their planes up in the sky ...

If they would go bankrupt ... it would be a big lose for aviation agian ... and for the spotters in BRU

SONG? I thought they trashed that because they couldn't make it "low-cost" enough.

Is Song a real airline? Do they have all the licences to operate if Delta should fail bankrupt? Or is Song just a marketing brand and nothing more?

Song is just all economy class DL flights not a separate company.

DL will probably file for Chapter 11 protection against bankruptcy; you can operate years under chapter 11 protection. UAL filed in 2002 and is still in Ch 11.

Because I am an Airbus lover ?! And it would be even harder to see
an operator close their business if it would have such a big fleet of
Airbus aircraft. How big is Delta's fleet currently ?

Thank you, liebensd. That is an amazing fleet ! 8O
And it seems to be logical to retire some aircraft to make more
profit if the a/c's can not be filled. Which are the oldest ? I guess
the MD80/90's and the Lockheed's ?

Excuse me my expression, but I find this kind of attitude quite narrow minded.

Whether Airbus operator or Boeing operator IF they should go bankrupt there will be many people on the street. And it's that which is very sad.
