They looked at us and said: "when we arrived at the airport we expected to see some wildlife. Where are the lions and elephants???"
They explained to us that overseas the expectation of this country is to find al sorts of wildlife and funny things here...
One year when my aunt went overseas,a man approached her and asked where she was from.She said she was from South Africa.
The guy asked her truthfully: How did you get here?
She frowned and told him that she " swam over the ocean..."
He asked, really?...
Then she told him that she actually flew in an aircraft all the way to the U.S.A.
I'm just wondering( and this is not to critisize anyone from America) if some still hold this view of South Africa, and if so, I'd like to tell them that they're completely wrong.
Yes, in Phalaborwa you find some wildlife roaming around freely in some streets, and there are even signs which cautions against hippos, but we're a friendly bunch, and you're quite safe if you remember to take a brick with you when you walk alone at night.
(My brother once stumbled across a hiena in the dark, but thought it was a dog-so he kicked it and it ran away, and while it was running away he realized it was a hiena!)
