"Westvleteren 12" the best beer in the world

Post by SN30952 »

The best beer in the world is "Westvleteren 12", a trappist beer.

As I said in another topic, I sure will try some Belgian beers someday, and I will surely keep this beer in mind.

The comments on the internet site give me the impression that the beer is not to sour/bitter, and a bit sweet. Definately something what I would like.

Has anyone here on Luchtzak expierence with this beer?

You can buy Westvleteren in Bier Tempel in Brussels and Brugge, and several other beer shops sell it too. One of the other shops in Brugge sells Westvleteren giftpacks.

I am wanting some more of the tops.

My favourite Trappist (and my second favourite beer overall) is Rochefort 10.

I've had the Blond (in 2001) and the 12 (in 2000). They are good beers, but not better than the Rochefort beers, from what I remember of them. The rarity value adds to the attraction of these beers but the 12 cannot compete with the 10 of Rochefort in my opinion. Rochefort 10 is the stronger one.

According to the same website, Rochefort 10 is number three and Westvleteren 8 number 9. Three Belgian trappists in the top ten, Ole!

When I heard that this was the case, I was immediately agreeing
Of course the rarity of this beer adds something special to it, but nevertheless it's the best I ever tasted.
And as I am a lucky b*****d I happen to drink them fairly often

It seems that the trappist monks are not that happy about the distinction they got. They live according to the rule of St Benedictus and they brew beer only when they need to to get some money. Such a sudden fame will increase the rarity of their beer. The only place where it will always be available is the restaurant next to their abbey in Westvleteren.

Here is a good review from that site.

No points for guessing what he's been drinking
Presentation: 33 cl bottle. Poured into a Chimay goblet []. Beautiful golden colour. Decent white head w/ good retention. Very pleasant, and ultra-smooth taste. Goes down like liquid silk, hiding the alcohol incredibly well, and ending in a gloriously dry, delicate finish. If you like Duvel (and who doesn't?...), this is for you. Not quite as complex, but even more drinkable.

I remember tasting my first Orval and it is the only beer ever to make me gag. Never again.

The monks of the Czech abbey of Zeliv recently claimed they were brewing the 7th trappist beer in the world (after the 6 Belgian ones: Achel, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle, Westvleteren - La Trappe in Holland is made in a brewery, not by the monks).

They were rebuffed. They brew their own beer, but they are not trappists, they are from the order of Prémontré (like Leffe, Floreffe, Grimbergen and Tongerlo).

At least there are still monks in the Czech Republic brewing Prémontré beer (unlike in Belgium where they have licensed breweries to make it).

Some people seem to underestimate the impact of Luchtzak-pub. Posting address and pricelist here on JUL 03, this forum caused the stock rupture! :drink:

An American magazine for men dated July 2005 now elected the Belgian beer 'Saison' of Dupont as the best beer in the world. Rochefort 10 was named the best Belgian beer by the same magazine.

Here is the exact reference of Men's Journal: http://www.mensjournal.com/feature/0507 ... world.html
The Best Beer in the World. Period.
Saison Dupont
Origin: Belgium
Alcohol content by volume: 6.5%
With its luminous orangey-blond color and huge, rocky head, this beer just looks great. But wait till you taste it: Like other saisons, Dupont's is made with a secret mix of herbs that give it an addictive earthy taste and an agreeable bitterness. At 6.5 percent, it's also got a mild kick, which balances a range of citrusy, malty flavors that even wizened beer connoisseurs struggle to describe. "Impossibly delicious," says legendary brewmaster Garrett Oliver. Saison Dupont is the "desert island beer" of many men (Oliver and present company included). Pop a cork, guys -- we think you'll feel the same way (http://www.brasserie-dupont.com).

Belgian beers:
GOLD
Trappistes Rochefort 10
ABV: 11.3%
In the great tradition of always having beer on hand for company, Belgium's Trappist monks still brew their own, to revive weary pilgrims -- and stock their own ready supply. There are still six Trappist breweries going strong (and a seventh in Holland); all of their beers, the most famous of which is the revered Chimay, are worth seeking out. But for us, the 11.3 percent Rochefort 10 easily takes the crown. Potent, spicy, and complex, this ale is suitable for aging like a vintage burgundy. Keep one on hand for your next visitor, and you know she'll be back. http://www.merchantduvin.com

Rochefort 10 is the second best beer in Belgium, as well as the second strongest beer in Belgium. I am trying to convert my Sloeber-loving friend to trying Rochefort 10. He had not realised the strength of gentle Sloeber, so I dread to think what effect Rochefort 10 would have!

We will definitely have some of the 10 in for Christmas :drink:
