Sushma Chawla IAC CMD
PMO blows a fuse over Aviation short-circuit
Being the seniormost officer in the Civil Aviation Ministry, Sushma Chawla was appointed as interim CMD of Indian Airlines after Sunil Arora relinquished charge last month. And the Ministry wrote to Cabinet Secretary B K Chaturvedi to set up a search committee to select a permanent CMD.
It turned out that the Ministry had not taken the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet to appoint Chawla—possibly arguing that this was just for the short term.
The bureaucrats at the Prime Minister’s Office weren’t amused. They are said to have taken exception to the fact that they learnt about the decision only after the media reported that Indian Airlines now has its first woman CMD.
The Cabinet Secretary is believed to have pulled up Aviation babus for not following procedure. So the Ministry backtracked and sent the already approved file for approval again. Don’t tell this to the bidders for Delhi and Mumbai airports.
