OK, airlines are screaming for cost reductions, employee pay cuts, benefit increases, fuel prices are killing them, people are loosing there pensions & jobs everyday, billions of dollars have been lost, investors have lost their butts and airlines continue to spend money on stuff like;
Official Airline of 2005 U.S. Pride Festivals
- serve as official airline sponsor of Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, New York and San Francisco Pride Festivals;
- have participation of hundreds of Delta and Song employees;
- showcase Delta Pride floats in parades in Atlanta and San Francisco;
- exhibit Delta and Song booths and offer promotions and giveaways at all Pride Festivals.
What am I missing here? The airlines will spend 1000's of dollars to build floats and tie up hundreds of employees when the company has not made $1 profit since 9/11? 1000's of people have lost their jobs? Wouldn't it make more sense to quit sponsoring any event(s) and reinvest that money into the company?

Am I the only one that thinks this is a huge waste of $$$?

**Note** Some people might say this post was created because it deals with "gay pride". This post is in no way directed at "gay pride". This post was created to dicuss the topic of sponsorship funds.

No sir I agree with you fully on this. Why put us in jeopardy just so you look good. How about all the oversold flight that we have to find volunteers on? Every volunteer receives a free ticket and is booked positive space on the next flight. On the E-Concourse in CLT alone we give away about 70 of these a day (1st and 2nd shift). So where does that money come from? This is a big problem thats only going to get worse.

Well the sponsoring can be seen as positive advertisement and thus attracts potential passengers, you should not ignore that...

True....but the flying public is entitled to know the truth about the tickets that they buy. In the advertisement they don't add that the ticket is non-refundable, non-transferable, added airport tax, 9-11 security tax, and if you miss your flight (whether or not it is your fault) you lost your money!!

Well....it is true but if you only spend 100 EUro on a plane ticket then you should know it will be restriced! Always read the fine print and you won;t be disappointed - I have learnt that the hard way!

If the airlines think that by sponsoring things like Gay Pride they can raise profile how can it be knocked....who on here is in Marketing? They can't NOT advertise and I'm sure a large enough proportion of the travelling public (never mind the cabin crews!) are gay so why not try and get the market share?

Where should they spend their marketing budgets if it isn;t on things like this?

I have no glue about the situation in the US, but isn't it a fact that if a company (not necessarily an airline) sponsors some kind of cultural or social activity, it reduces the amount of taxes it has to pay? This may be different in other countries, but I know this is the case in Austria. This and the effect of advertising may be a point.

Although I admit, that it's also a question of the scale involved.

That is also a good shout - it is the same in the UK. Charitable donations, marketing, sponsorship etc. can come out of a company's taxable revenue. Another very good reason - I would be surprised if it was different there!
