John Glenn, American Hero of the Space Age, Dies at 95

John Glenn, a freckle-faced son of Ohio who was hailed as a national hero and a symbol of the space age as the first American to orbit Earth, then became a national political figure for 24 years in the Senate, died on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. He was 95.

Blue skies forever Major Glenn.

Every now and then I refer to him in business “exchanges”.
After his flight on Mercury, being the first American to have been in orbit, the press asked him (a US marine !) if he had been afraid at any stage of the mission. Explosion during launch, no-return orbiting, missed re-entry, … and he answered :
"None of these. But I was scared when for the first time I put my butt into this thing and realized it had been built by the lowest bidder."

A way to remember one of these pioneers.

It's not really "Latest aviation news", as it happened in 2010, but interesting reading. Sorry for the poor pilot who never went back to work and eventually died. I hope that US Airways has considered its responsibilities and acted consequently.

Passenger wrote:Talking about Amsterdam Airport... A very nice full-black HiFly A340 did positioning flight AB107P from Berlin TXL to AMS this afternoon. Safe landing, but engine n°2 has hit an aviobridge during taxiing at Amsterdam. There is some damage to the cowling, and outgoing OR-341 is now delayed from 16h45 till 08h00.
Nice indeed but could it be that again, again and again the VDGS edited: Visual Docking Guidance Systems) didn't pick up properly the incoming because of its dark colour? OO-SNB Rackham, Royal Jordanian, City Bird back in the days ....
What I don't get is that "normally" if the docking guidance system does not obtain a proper image it displays an error message so that the pilot stops short and a marshaller is called in to guide into the stand.
AMS confirms the VDGS problem you've mentionned for black aircraft. Solution: a marshall iso the VDGS indeed...

Yep. KBX = Koningin Beatrix. It's not certain yet that new one will be PH-KWA. Maybe it's gonna be PH-MAX (Maxima). But the Boss will probably fly it himself, just like now with the F70.

The new one will be a BBJ (737-700) or an Embraer Lineage 1000 Executive, Dutch state tv reported a few months ago:
http://nos.nl/artikel/2107395-wordt-het ... braer.html
The Lineage 1000 is based on the ERJ-190, and KLM has quite a few of them. Thus no problem to get crew.
