Is Air India stripping its new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner VT-ANI?

After the cannibalisation of parts of its newest Boeing 777-200LR VT-ALH Maharashtra, it appears national carrier Air India is stripping one its new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, VT-ANI for parts.

VT-ANI, construction number (MSN) 36277 was the 46th 787-8 Dreamliner built. It made its first flight on May 23, 2012 and delivered to Air India and ferried on October 9, 2012. The aircraft was used extensively flying to Australia, London, Frankfurt etc. Suddenly around April 22, 2014 this aircraft mysteriously disappeared from the skies. The world aviation community has been abuzz with the absence of this new aircraft from the skies.

There is little doubt the airline is having a torrid time of its ownership experience with the newest aircraft from Boeing. While the rest of the 787 operators are close to a 99% despatch reliability ratio, statements by the civil aviation ministers to India’s parliament suggest Air India is far behind, with a flight despatch reliability below 97%.

While interchanging parts between aircraft is an accepted norm in the industry, Air India appears to be the only 787 operator in the world that is resorting to this tactic of last resort.

Mind that this is for the 787-9 version, they will probably have 335 in the 787-8. The 787-9 is certified up to 420 seats, for the smaller -8 version it's 381.

If AirAsia X can fit 377 seats in a A330-300, 375 on a 789 should still be ok

On Nov. 8, The Museum of Flight in Seattle will become the first museum in the world to add a Boeing 787 Dreamliner to its collection. The Boeing Company will donate its Dreamliner "Number 3" to the Museum.

This particular 787, ZA003, was the third Dreamliner built. It first flew on March 14, 2010. In addition to its role in the flight test and certification program, Boeing flew ZA003 to 23 countries during a global showcase of the 787 called the Dream Tour. While on exhibit at the Museum, the airplane's interior will be partially configured as an airliner and flight test aircraft, with the remaining space devoted to displays covering the development of the 787, including artifacts from the programme.

FAA proposes requiring fix for Boeing 787 Dreamliner

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration proposed requiring a fix for Boeing's 787-8 Dreamliner on Wednesday, a move prompted by "numerous reports of failures of proximity sensors" on the high-tech plane's wings.

A sensor failure could cause the plane to go off the runway while landing on a short runway or in adverse weather, the FAA said in a proposed airworthiness directive scheduled to be published on Friday.

The directive, if adopted, would affect 15 planes registered in the United States.

"We have received numerous reports of failures of the proximity sensor within the slat skew detection mechanism assembly (DMA) leading to slats up landing events," the FAA said.

"It was determined that the failed sensors had broken magnet wires due to stresses induced by thermal expansion and contraction of an epoxy applied around them," the agency added.

The new rule would require 787-8 operators to replace the slat skew detection mechanism assembly within two years of the date the directive takes effect. The cost is estimated at $935 per plane.

It however looks like they increased the spacing between the letters of Azerbaijan, not exactly an improvement in my opinion.

Also on the 767 it has too much spacing in my opinion.

Looks better on the A320 (at least the name 'Azerbaijan', for the rest I quite like that livery on large aircraft such as the A340, 767 and 787)

Indeed the letters don't look very good. For me the coulour is not right. It would look better in white and other letter font...
