United converted 7 of its 8 remaining 787-8 orders to the 787-10. The 7 aircraft will be delivered from 2018, the 788's were planned for delivery during 2017-2018. The only remaining 787-8 on order will be delivered this year.

United now has (besides the 1 remaining 787-8) 26 787-9's (of which the first delivery is expected in August/September) and 27 787-10's on order and 10 options for the 787-10. This will leave United with just 12 787-8's. UA was one of the launch customers of the 787-10 in 2013 with 10 new orders and 10 converted from their existing 787-8 and -9 order book.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it seems that except for JY-BAA, the other two 787's have their nacelles painted in the regular Royal Jordaninan colors. Don't know if they are planning to paint all their 787 engines in these colors or not...

Meanwhile, Russia’s Transaero cancels its order for four Boeing 787-8s. The deal was finalized in April 2012 and first delivery was expected in 2014.

The Moscow-based carrier plans to focus on its order for four 747-8I aircraft. The carrier also has four Airbus A380s on order. CEO Olga Pleshakova said the latter two aircraft types would replace older 747s and expand the carrier’s fleet from 2015.

In July, Transaero signed a letter of intent with Airbus for 12 A330neos and eight A330ceos at the Farnborough Airshow.

Transaero’s current fleet includes 102 aircraft, comprising 20 Boeing 747s, 14 777s, 18 767s, 45 737s, three Tupolev Tu-214s and two Tu-204-100Cs.

JTSB fails to pinpoint cause of 2013 ANA 787 battery incident

The Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) has released findings from an investigation into the 16 January 2013 main battery incident aboard an All Nippon Airways Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which resulted in an emergency landing and contributed to a global grounding of the type.

While the 100-page investigation report does not identify a specific cause for the lithium ion battery failure aboard ANA flight 692, it provides probable causes and has recommendations for both the FAA and Boeing.

According to radarbox24, there was more than a smell of smoke. The plane was squawking 7700 with indication of fire in the cargo hold. Airport fire service was advised not to open the cargo hold until all passengers had deplaned.

Air Berlin has cancelled its order with Boeing for 33 aircraft, currently worth around $5 billion at list prices. The rescinded deal includes 18 737s and 15 787s.

Not taking the 33 aircraft ordered will significantly reduce future capital expenditure for Air Berlin and improve their balance sheet.

45 Boeing 737 NG aircraft will remain in service on European short and medium-haul routes.

Except for the first two (Shanghai Airlines is owned by China Eastern, they made the 787 decision together) who blamed it on the long delays (and I believe China Eastern ordered additional A330's instead), the cancellations had more to do with strategic choices of these airlines. Air Berlin is not in a financial position to pay for such an order, for Transaero the order did not make a lot of sense anyway (they ordered only 4, which would be an extremely expensive small sub-fleet while already operating 6 types of widebodies, they now signed a deal for a much larger amount of A330's (neo and ceo) which are available faster in these amounts and can replace a larger part of their ageing widebody fleet) and also S7 Airlines chanced its network strategy, they haven't ordered another widebody type and operate just two 767's.

Btw, interesting to note, Etihad said that it's 37 options for the 787 could be (partly) used for partner airlines (so airlines like Air Berlin, Alitalia (which cancelled its A350-800 order and has no new-generation widebody on order anymore), Jet Airways (which already has 20 787-9's on order), etc.). Especially Air Berlin seems to be a likely candidate for this in the future. Virgin Australia also commented early this month that they want a "bulk order" for either the 787 or the A350 together with their partners and shareholders Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Etihad (ANZ is 787-only, the two others have both on order).

LOT flight LO45 from Warsaw to Toronto just returned to Warsaw. It's the same 787 aircraft that diverted to Glasgow some days ago.

The reason for the LO45 return to Warsaw was a sick passenger. Passenger died. R.I.P.

On Luchtvaartnieuws.nl:

The three month old Arkefly 787 was grounded since 28th September for an engine problem. During a check, something in the engine was out of position (engine is a GEnx). Boeing advised an engine change, and this was done by TUI Airlines in Brussels. No details about the technical issue were released.

The 787 will fly from Brussels to Amsterdam today, and will then perform a flight to Palma and Ibiza.

Boeing offers Air India $24million in B787 compensation claims

Boeing has reportedly offered Air India USD24million in compensation for losses the airline incurred as a result of incessant problems with its fleet of B787-8s. India's Hindustan Times says the amount offered is approximately half what the airline had originally pitched for - USD48million.

Airline officials who spoke to the newspaper say they arrived at the figure based on actual costs incurred as a result of having to service the aircraft loan during grounding, retraining of pilots, and commercial losses incurred as a result of damage to the airline's image.

Air India's qualms also pertain to the weight of the B787s which it says, is above that originally stated by the manufacturer and which has subsequently impacted negatively on the aircraft's fuel efficiency.

Air India successfully sought and received compensation from Boeing for the late delivery of the aircraft in 2012.
