I went on to Flybe's website but it did not give me the option of flying from Glasgow to Brussels via Southampton or anywhere else. Ryanair don't even fly from Edinburgh to Charleroi on the Saturday I want to travel. I could have gone all the way to Edinburgh Airport and flown with BMI direct to Brussels but they wanted £755 which is utterly ridiculous! So I ended up booking train tickets all the way from Irvine to Ostend. Scotland needs much better air links with Belgium, to Ostend hopefully but also to Brussels.
Maybe the best for you, would be to definitively move to Ostend ...

Strange to read this now when last night in a bar in Ostend I randomly got talking to 2 Scöttish guys (from Fife and Dundee) who would have sure appreciated a direct flight to Ostend from Scotland :)

Why not start a new belgian company from Ostend to a few new destinations?

A lot has been said about Ostend already. On the one hand: we have an airport with all facilities for passenger and cargo. But on the other hand, because of its location at the sea, it loses automatically already 50% of a regional feeding.
Many airlines have served Ostend the last 50 years and many have disappeared.
But from a passenger's point of view Ostend is a great airport. Just at the wrong place ( for today. Who knows about the future?)
The danger is that once the government gives up and develops Ostend airport as a residential area, it will be extremely difficult to set up somewhere else in Belgium a new airport. Our country is really full.

Agreed that no new aerodromes will be created, thus everyone closed is one lost and never recovered. Certainly a startup airline would be a good reason for NOT closing the airport (though I do not think there is any actual threat, right now).

Go for it Shanti, we are waiting for you! If ever you go ahead, I promise I buy a ticket in your first month of operations!

Nice increase in PAX figures. If that trend continues they will come close to 250.000 this year..
Hopefully some new routes can be added even. Barcelona would be an interesting one. Both for leisure aswell as for business and connections to/from other Mediterranean cities.Same for Glasgow/Edinburg in Scotland. If JAF is not interested,Flybe or Easyjet could be "motivated" to set up routings. such as GLA/EDI - OST - BCN &v.v. or EDI-SEN-OST-BCN..;Pax potential on every sector ,and beyond with 1 or 2 stops..

I just read something that the French company EGIS would become the company that is involved with the privatisation of Ostend airport.
Luckely enough, Egis is active in this field and not a real estate company. So hope grows for Ostends future !

Spectacular increase of movements for December 2011, but unfortunately a dramatic decrease of PAX.
Thanks to a good first half 2011, again a yearly increase of PAX :)

Let's hope for a new growth (especially freight) in 2012!

No flights allowed for light aircraft (thus no training flights) due to works on the runway until 14:00local every day, plus the awful weather in April (strong crosswinds) ... not a real surprise the figures are so bad.

I sincerely hope things start to improve soon. I'm planning to go to Ostend in August or September. I've just started looking at my travel options. Unfortunately it's not that easy getting from Scotland to Ostend, if it was I would go more often!!

On Wednesday night, National Airlines DC-8 N155CA departed from Ostend for the very last time. It flew to Gander to drop off its last cargo, and then continued to an American desert airport for the rest of its life, after 43 years of cargo service.

The fire department at OST has given this DC-8 a nice tribute, as you can see in this Dutch Scramble forum:
