Did one of its wheels look smaller and have a yellow mark that said "Not rated for more than 50 mph?"

That would be an argument, but I can hardly see further problems originate from blowing a tyre

Yes but you have to remember that by opting to land back at your departure airport, you have KNOWN landing conditions. Especially with long haul, even though you might be flying to an airport suitable ...

Anybody knows how fast a 747 can dump fuel? And given a max TOM, how much needs to be dumped/burned to get to max LM?

Thanks!

TCAS also has its limitations..... Well, only as long as not every plane out there has a Mode S transponder. I'd like two know whether the two 'private planes' involved in the Dash-8 near-miss near Blackpool carried it. I very much doubt it, they probably only carried mode C. If it's the case TCAS ...

Making the trip by car or train from Oxford to Cambridge is simply hell, even though there's only something like 100km between the two cities. It can be up to 4 hours by car or bus if the traffic is bad. And by train, you have to change TWICE and go via London...

But I'm just not sure that he can ...

It's amazing how people ignore history. So many American carriers went bankrupt because they just bought planes like money was no object. And like Seb said, look at Swiss. And who's the only airline in the US that's been consistenlty making profits? The one that grew the slowest (by far): Southwest ...

Yesterday's copy of Flight International says that so far they have not found anything wrong with the actuators or the hinges of the rudder on the Air Transat plane. And no pilot-related rudder movement either. Basically, in their own words, the investigators still have no idea! They have not found ...

Boy, this is going to be an interesting lawsuit to follow (someone from his familly will surely sue...).

In case anybody wonders "should I help if there is an unruly passenger", you might want to keep this in mind:

The Commander (captain, in most cases) of the plane may REQUEST that you assist ...

So here's a NTSB report that occured since the 1998 AD was issued, you'll note the common problems with rudder inputs and failures. An interesting read.
Thanks for that, it was indeed an interesting read. Three things though:
1) The problem was found to be with a solenoid in the rudder actuator ...

As TEACH says in his next post (2nd post above), “The ntsb report does not say that the rudder separated from the vertical stabilizer before it fell off”. I agree, or, at least, I could not find any such statement in the report. .
So your entire argument rests on the fact that they found pieces of ...

I guess the similarities that I see are:

1. The rudder detached from the stabilizer IN BOTH EVENTS

OK, that's it, we should start a separate thread called "thread about the Air Transat incident for people who not only read the AA587 report, but also know the difference between a rudder and a ...

There the it was the fault of the Russian pilot who didn't listen to its own TCAS wich has higher priority then what the controller says.

The Russians pilots just followed policy established in their country i.e. you may disregard TCAS if ATC gives you avoidance guidance. This is not what ICAO ...

Could it be that a brake disc was blocked causing over heating?

All airliners have ABS (well, it's not called ABS but you get the idea), so brakes can't lock and not release. You don't need anything abnormal for brakes to catch fire. All ops manuals give the minimum time to wait after landing (or ...

It's not likely that over-correction was the problem, simply because AA587 pretty much showed that the rudder is so well attached that the tail assembly will fail first in case too big an aerodynamic load is created by large and opposite rudder displacements. My guess would be that some part of the ...

BTW, 'low fuel' is not an emergency. It just means the crew is concerned that they are getting close to the point where they would land with less than the Reserve fuel on board (a big no-no). If your FMS tells you that you WILL get into Reserve fuel, then it is definitely time to declare an ...

I was going to say, rudder, not radar :-) That was funny...

I wonder what kind of fuel consumption you would get by reducing the thrust on one side to match the remaining good engine on the other side. You would not have asymetric thrust issues, but you would obviously not fly at optimal speed and ...
