Slipped to October - 787 first Flight

Looks like the announcement that Boeing doesn't want to make may have trickled out on its own. According to the Seattle PI, first flight has slipped "more than a few days" into October.

Boeing says it continues to hold its customer delivery dates.

I'm not sure I follow your line of thought.
There was outside interference...wake turbulence from the 747 that departed just before them. On the CVR, even the crew says that they've encountered wake turbulence.

I think i read somewhere that American Airlines was studying putting winglets on thier MD 80 fleet to extend the life of the plane in the fleet by making it more fuel efficient. Any word on that?

The winglets are going on their 757 fleet. They're also doing third party work installing winglets ...

Several years ago, Rolls-Royce approached AA with a proposal to re-engine their entire MD fleet with the BR715. Although the BR had some initial growing pains, it was (and is) a strong, efficient power plant - ESPECIALLY when compared to the JT8D.
