Re: French Senate report about the A400M..

According to this source the RAF did initially lease four c-117s, but eventually bought them plus two more and is considering a seventh:

Re: 787 Poised to Fly?

From an e-mail I received: "The Boeing Company is proud to announce that the window for first flight is planned to open at 10 a.m. on December 15. The first flight will occur from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. This date is dependent upon final internal reviews, taxi test and receiving the final...

Re: Turkish Airlines B737 crashes in Schiphol Amsterdam

Regarding a negative altitude reading triggering an alarm: There are airports with runways below sea level which have airline service. If I'm not mistaken, Schipol is one of them. KIPL (Imperial County) airport in California has a runway altitude of -57 ft. KTRM (Thermal) does not have airline servi...

Here's a link to video of Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's TV interview Sunday evening. It's worth viewing!

Re: US Airways A320 ditches in Hudson River - pax and crew OK !

According to this article, the A320 "Ditch Switch" was not activated by the pilots before the water landing. It says the ditching checklist is 3 pages long and implies there was not enough time to go through it. It also says the APU may have been restarted in the effort to start an engine....

According to a WSJ article, the APU was running and providing electrical power during the descent.

Good question! I thought of batteries, but then wondered if they had enough power to operate the flight controls as opposed to just the electronics.

Re: US Airways A320 ditches in Hudson River - pax and crew OK !

NTSB corrected its previous statement and now says that one engine is still attached to a wing. That makes me wonder about asymmetric water drag on touchdown and how the wings were kept level. A question: can anyone relate how the fly-by-wire Airbus system is powered with both engonis shut down? Pre...

Re: US Airways A320 ditches in Hudson River - pax and crew OK !

Just heard on the TV news that both engines are missing from the wings of the A320. I wonder if this could be why the plane didn't summersault? One might have expected the engines to trip the aircraft, as sometimes happens in light aircraft landing on a soft, muddy field.

Re: First scheduled A380 from MEL to LAX has taken off

There was a Qantas Captain (allegedly) on a Los Angeles radio station this morning urging listeners to book a 1st class suite on an A380 to Australia for US$27,000+. Let's see, that's close to $2,000/hour. I think I'll pass. Incidentally, seatguru.com shows economy seats on the Qantas A380 as having...

Re: United to charge for food on translatlantic flights

United has changed its mind. Here's an excerpt from an e-mail I just received from UA: ".... We heard you and have decided not to move forward with the test of offering customers buy-on-board options in United Economy on certain trans-Atlantic flights. We will continue to offer complimentary h...

The reference may be to EOS, rather than EOR. We're flying LAX to STN (London) on MaxJet in a 767 with 102 seats for $722 incl tax. Not as roomy as EOS, but quite nice for the price.

The one color paint on the nacelles of the 787 is not to save weight, but to preserve laminar flow.

The Cessna 162 is designed as a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA), and thus is not in the same category as a Katana. LSAs have a maximum weight of 600 KG (1320 pounds) and relaxed pilot certification requirements. The intention is to make flying more affordable. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-spor...
