ETOPS

ETOPs approval is in two parts.

First the product approval is granted by the certifying agency that certifies the aircraft. For example the FAA certified the 777. If ETOPs approval is granted for the product, this becomes the upper limit for its operation. For example 207 minutes.

The second part ...

I don't think you fully appreciate this yet. Today there is no A340E. There is no A340-replacement. There is only today's A340-500/600 and a lot of talk. Those choices need to be made. The 787 and 777 families are better, not because Boeing says so, but the orders say so. At the same time the A350 ...

It comes down to cost-benefit. How much does AI spend, and how much benefit (sales and margin) can they anticipate in return.

AI is facing into the launch of an entire new family (A350) at the same time as working through A380 development and certification.

The Z-chart is getting very crowded ...

After the Record Flight

After the Record Flight (22 h 42) all were somewhat tired but no worse than say a typical transpacific flight. With a total of 35 on board there was plenty of room. Here are some pics, you can see the mood was happy more than tired!

Engines

GEnx.

Which by the way ran to 80,500 lb of thrust last week in only its second run. And ahead of schedule.

Gives you a common core for all 787, A350 and 747-8.

Now that's what we call commonality.

GE90 was floated as an idea by Randy in his blog. But just too darn much thrust! Oh well. We can't ...

Range

777-200 range: 5,210 nm (305 pax triclass)
777-200ER range: 7,730 nm (301 pax)
777-300ER range: 7,880 nm (365 pax)
777-200LR range: 9,420 nm (301 pax)

So you can see the LR is in a class by itself vs. the -200ER. This opens up routes that would not be possible before. As PIA have shown, there is a ...

Read carefully

If the customer wants delivery end of 07 as stated in the interview, then AI cannot propose any enhanced version of the A340 for this timeframe. If delivery was 2011 or later that might be possible. With most of the large orders already decided the remaining market is too small for AI to launch a ...

For engine buffs the version of the CFM for the 707 was the never-produced CFM56-1. Later it was enlarged and became the very successful CFM56-2 for the KC135/E6 et al.

That picture was taken on the flightline at Boeing Everett, Paine Field. After rolling ut of the factory bare, it goes to the fuel farm for fueling and leak testing, then to paint. Then to the flightline for ground engine runs, B1 and C1 flights...then delivery.

Boeing will break its own record in the near future for longest distance in its weight class, already held by a 777 (check FAI if you are interested in specific record).

Flight will be approx 13,000 statute miles, >20 hrs, Asia-Europe the long way, over the Pacific, US ...
