On 1 September 1998, a Sabena Airbus A330-301 was being towed from a gate to a maintenance facility at Brussels Airport when the driver of the TUG lost directional control on the slippery ground surface. The aircraft slid out of control and impacted a Sobelair Boeing 737-329, puncturing a large hole in the fuselage of the 737. Both aircraft were repaired and subsequently returned to service.
I remember!
The aircraft was not towed and had to move from maintenance to a terminal’s gate on it’s own engines.
Then it happened!
I led the investigation of the incident at that time!
Memories!
Oui, j’ai été un des inspectorats d’investigation.
Une erreur d’himain,
I found this a very a interesting story, but I’ve been reading and seeing the A330 was being towed. From what I can see, there isn’t any way a tow vehicle would fit or go under the tail of the Boeing aircraft, so it stands to reason the A330 was being taxied. I agree with van Rijckevorsel that the A330 was taxied to the gate and not towed. I’ve being in the commercial aviation industry for the past 46 years and I’ve seen a lot of thing on the flight line.
