End of the monopoly of the Brussels City Shuttle to Brussels Midi. Euro Coach Shuttle now offers the single trip for 10 euros and the return for 16 euros (vs 14 and 25 for Brussels City Shuttle). A new low cost at CRL?

As always, it's good to have competition; the fares will probably be reduced at the Brussels City Shuttle.
But there are comparatively fewer departures by the new operator, especially to Brussels for the last flights in the evening, for instance ...

6,44 millions used CRL in 2014.
The "damage" of Ryanair having some flight in BRU is much less than expected -5% (350.000 pax) instead of the targeted -11%, which tend to prove one big theory of some members of this forum : the 2 airports are complementary and maybe not opponents.
My messages reflect my personal opinion which may be different than yours. I beleive a forum is made to create a debate so I encourage people to express themselves, the way they want, with the ideas they want. I expect the same understanding in return.

Just to be complete: In 2013 the figure was 6.79 million passengers.

It also proves that Ryanair is not just simply moving it's own pax from CRL to BRU, but are in fact attracting a new type of pax. Something that a lot of members are denying over and over again.

Now that BRU is back at its highest level in history in terms of pax, it is interesting to look at the growth of the market as a whole.

2000: BRU had 21.6 million and for CRL I don't even know, based on wiki they had 773,431 in 2001, so let's say in 2000 for BRU and CRL combined about 22-22.5 million.

2014: no final data for BRU yet, but let's round it to 22 million as it will be close to that and CRL close to 6.5 million, BRU+CRL makes about 28.5 million.

Not spectacular, but still a nice healthy growth taking into account 9/11, Sabena's bankruptcy, the financial and economical crisis (which is still not completely over, especially in Europe).

Careful with making general assumptions like that, Sean.

The reduction in CRL is a NET reduction, including the expansion of other companies at the airport.

It would be more interesting to see just how many Ryanair passenger CRL could welcome this year compared to last year, and extrapolate this difference to take into account that in 2014, they weren't active at BRU yet for the first few months.

My rough estimation woud be that ryanair have actually shifted around 500 to 600,000 of its passengers from CRL to BRU; the others they have gained at BRU are very much new passengers indeed, so as with everything, there's truth in BOTH positions, neither of them being fully correct on its own.

What is good for the airport of CRL is that it has managed to partially offset that significant GROSS reduction in ryanair traffic (likely more than half a million passengers!) by a meaningful increase in passengers from other airlines, as it makes them less dependant on just one customer, but the bad news for CRL is that it is still a net reduction of course.

One can only hope for them that ryanair finds out the grass isn't so much greener in BRU after all, something which an increasing number of events (or lack thereof) seem to hint at.

Since this is the topic about CRL, this is not the place to discuss it, but let's just say in a nutshell that the much discussed massive expansion at BRU comes across as fairly lackluster, to say the least. Combined with the not to be misunderstood public charm offensives and media campaigns towards both BRU (at first) and then going back to CRL again, the picture should be clear too all who can read between the lines.
Let's just leave it there, shall we?

But except for Dublin, so far we didn't see much yet of the multiple new business routes that were predicted by several people, neither the more winter-like destinations that were predicted to come to cover for the drop in flights to the summer destinations. Without wanting to be negative about anything (I don't want to start another fight, I just want to mention it), I expected more new routes from FR at BRU after all the big talk in 2014. Maybe more is still coming for S15, but so far it's far from impressive.

It seems that that taxpayers' money was well spent here.

Definitely well spent, if you compare it to the much higher amount of taxpayers' money that is used for the Belgian railways.

With the opening of a new base in Bratislava, Ryanair will increase its frequency from Charleroi to that destination to 5x per week from Winter 2015.
