Now also Air France is mulling a 11-abreast layout for its A380 fleet, up from 10-abreast.

Emirates said that its 115-ordered A380s, to be completed in mid-2019, is the “absolute maximum” aircraft its Dubai International Airport hub will be able to handle. A switch to Dubai World Central will open up more capacity for the airline, but will not be possible within the next 10 years.

Airbus plans a further cut in A380 build rates amid a continuing dearth of new aircraft orders. The company is assessing how best to drop output below the 12 planes a year, with a decision made before the end 2017 in the absence of further sales.

And finally some good news for the A380:

Airbus Superjumbo May Get Lifeline as Emirates Mulls 20-Jet Deal
(Bloomberg) -- Emirates, the biggest operator of Airbus SE’s A380 superjumbo, is in talks about the purchase of 20 more of the double-decker jets in a move that could extend the lifespan of a program dogged by slow sales, people familiar with the discussions said.
The contract would be worth $8.7 billion before discounts, though negotiations are at an early stage and it hasn’t been established exactly how many aircraft the Persian Gulf carrier requires, according to the people, who asked not to be named because the talks are private. Airbus might also be required to commit to measures to make the A380 more efficient before a deal is signed.

Dubai-based Emirates could reach an agreement to acquire the planes before the end of 2017 for deliveries starting in 2020, two people said. That would hand Airbus a lifeline in maintaining production at a level where it can break even on each jet, after the company warned this week it would have to cut output further in the absence of new orders this year.
Emirates said an email it has no plans “at this time” to buy more A380s, though regularly engages with manufacturers on “product updates and enhancement of current and future aircraft.” A spokesman for Toulouse, France-based Airbus said it doesn’t comment on confidential client discussions.
Emirates, the world’s leading long-haul carrier, is by far the biggest buyer and operator of the A380, with orders for more than 140 planes configured for 489 to 615 seats.
Tim Clark, the airline’s president, had indicated that it would buy as many as 200 more superjumbos if Airbus and engine supplier Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc agreed to develop an upgraded version equipped with more efficient turbines. That’s something the planemaker is reluctant to do given the lack of demand from other carriers, though Emirates is still pushing for performance improvements, according to one of the people.
The purchase under discussion, which could be split between firm orders and options, may be intended to replace A380s on leases that are set to expire in coming years, rather than to boost capacity at a time when regional demand is at a low ebb.

Sure? Today, Emirates says it has no plans at this time to purchase additional A380s, despite the rumours.

497 passengers is the airline’s average capacity of the A380s currently in operation today – which are consistently attracting above-average passenger load factors. With all A380 cabin enablers, the A380 average seat count would move from 497 to 575 in four classes, and generate significantly more revenue for airlines.

Cabin enablers description

New Forward Stairs – 20 more passengers (Business, Premium Economy & Economy Classes)

The NFS involves relocation of the forward stair from Door 1 to Door 2, and combining the entrance of the NFS to the upper deck (going up), with the adjacent staircase to the lower-deck crew-rest (going down). The NFS would make room for up to 20 additional passengers.

Combined Crew-Rest Compartment (CCRC) – three more passengers (Premium Economy)

For the CCRC, the existing flight-crew-rest (behind the cockpit in the mezzanine area at Door 1) is moved down and combined with the cabin crew rest on the lower deck. This innovation frees space for three extra Premium-Economy passengers at the front of the main-deck.

11-abreast 3-5-3 economy layout on the main-deck – 23 more passengers (Economy Class)

Thanks to an innovative seating concept developed by Airbus and its seating partners, Airbus is able to maintain an 18inch seat-width while offering airlines an 11-abreast Economy Class on the main-deck in a ‘3-5-3’ configuration. This enables an increase in capacity of 23 seats – adding significantly to the A380’s revenue-generating potential.

New Aft-Galley Stair Module (AGSM) – 14 more passengers + two food trolleys

The AGSM involves the redesign of the rear-stair from a spiral configuration to a straight/square one. On the main-deck, this allows valuable storage volume for galley modules. Overall the AGSM provides space for 14 more revenue passengers plus two extra food trolleys.

Upper-deck sidewall stowage removal – 10 more passengers (Business Class)

The option to remove the sidewall stowages on the upper-deck increases the wall-to-wall cabin width at foot-rest height – which makes space for up to 10 more business class seats / beds when an angled herring-bone arrangement is used.

Nine-abreast Premium Economy on the main deck – 11 more passengers (Premium Economy)

The A380’s generous main-deck cross section – significantly wider than any other commercial airliner – is allowing seat manufacturers to optimise their Premium Economy (PE) seat designs to create the industry’s most efficient and comfortable PE layout possible. This layout enables 11 more PE seats than in an eight-abreast layout.

That looks all very well, but overall it will mean a decrease in comfort for the economy passengers. As usual!

Emirates expects reassurances from Airbus on the future of the A380 programme before it will consider another aircraft order, as the carrier is concerned about the residual value and financial implications.
